I will play more techtonica i cannot answer for now about this game itself.
This doesn't address the peeve you quoted though. Although the map might almost never run out of resources, the individual resource 'nodes' will, thus requiring redesign of the base.
If the only way to get infinite resources is a sandbox mode that makes everything free or instantly unlocked like most sandbox modes then that'd be kinda dull.
Grounded has a good custom game design where you can toggle most aspects of the game so you can tailor it for the experience you want.
I think 3-5k hours is a good amount and no infinite would be necessary with that much already. Don't let the babies rule the world. And like what was already pointed out you will be moving further away from those earlier points and thus moving your drills/smelters anyway just for mere convenience. I've only been playing less than 24 hrs but so far I like the game, don't understand the research part so much yet
