As soon as we introduce the Mutations progression mechanic (we plan to do it within a few weeks), the Alien Monster play will feel more fleshed out and complete. Along with it, we'll introduce a number of needed balancing changes, too, since the addition of Mutations will affect the balance.
Regarding every update being Merc-focused and the Aliens getting only nerfs, I have to disagree. We've introduced certain buffs along with nerfs for this class with patches like 0.5.1, 0.4.9 (e.g., increased their light resistance), 0.4.7 (increased the wire charge radius), 0.4.6 (more energy on Caves of Turion), and so on. These are just a few examples from the top of my head.
I would also like to add that the balance in our game is not final, and we must iterate and experiment on our way to finding the perfect balance. We'll keep working to ensure the game feels fair for both classes.
The alien mutations (skill tree, whatever) won't be enough to keep players engaged and the newest map was... much too open in the majority of areas... Obviously the maps need more work, but maps with ambient and random events, giving players a reason to do things in the map that aren't "loot" or "shoot" to exist etc need to happen. I've already said it's not enough to just add guns and stims to the game to generate more players, but clearly that's on deaf ears.
