That's a great question!
The + icon doesn't require you to do a specific action, but instead refers to combos that can be chained onto other combos. For example, with the Hook ability, if you perform a combo with a weapon and then add the Hook combo onto that combo, you end up generating a special hook shot that'll carry you across the room and do special types of damage to enemies in the process.
This game is so awesome, name another game where I get to play a rhythm game, a movement shooter, AND a fighting game at the same time lmao.
