Last year for perpetual licenses?
I heard a rumour that this year will be the last year to offer perpetual licenses; after that they'll be exclusively switching to subscriptions. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

This question came up last year since they took off perpetual license on their website. And no one knows because there is no announcement of this. Now it may come true and it may not come true because they have shown that they have no obligation to keep perpetual licenses, even on steam. These rumors will persist until they finally pull the plug.

But I would like to point out that they are furthering separating their steam license and licenses you get from the website because once February comes you can not link your steam account to the substance website to request a standalone license.

Gotcha. In that case, it's probably just a matter of time before they take it off Steam altogether, Adobe being Adobe.

Aye, I been a long time user of Adobe and moved to Substance at the start and to get away and yet they have this now.....Adobe has a bad reputation and yes its a matter of time, i'm sure before they MAKE it sub only, I have no doubt...... I give it another year and they will make it Sub only, and when that happens, I will be leave. as I did before... Infinity is nice... and cheap. I went there....Mixer is fantastic as well, I 'm a huge Designer fan, but I will just use the old version when they pull this and use other software...but I give it another year. and Adobe will pull it.. I will bet...

TBH, I'm torn. I want to support the developers, but I don't want to give money to anti-competition, anti-consumer industry giants like Adobe and Autodesk.

There are plenty of alternatives, varying in prices (some free options too) but ultimately it's going to depend on your needs.

Want a job within the industry, at a studio? You'll be working with Substance for the time being.

Working for yourself? Shop elsewhere if you don't want to support Adobe. There are always alternatives. Weigh out the pros and cons of each.

Definitely. 3DCoat, ArmorPaint, various Blender addons, Quixel Mixer etc, are all pretty good alternatives. I've decided though that I'm willing to support software developers as long as they offer perpetual licenses. But as soon as someone goes subscription only, they're dead to me (looking at you, Autodesk).

I want 3DCoat for the hand painted workflow alone.

same, I left Adobe before to Substance, I left AUTO Desk after years of supporting as soon as they go Sub ...I'm gone. So lets hope they don't but if they do, many folks are gone, I been here since day 1.

It is a perpetual license. The benefit to linking your account is the ability to use Substance without running steam drm.
You can still choose to do so, for whatever reason.

Is there any alternative texturing software that has the preserve strokes feature? This is the most important feature for me in Substance Painter which is making it hard to try out other softwares.

Check in with Marmoset a year or so down the line, they might have caught up by then? I don't know.

Marmoset does not do the same job. It is an advanced rendering engine. Even its developer recommended this software for these kind of tasks :papyrus:

Reread what I wrote Skele, you're smarter than that.

On a side note, they aren't a bad alternative but yeah they a predominately a rendering software with PBR texturing as an added bonus.
