Most games of this genre operate mostly the same way until you build up some base to automate things.
And yes, auto-clickers are advised. Its probably why the first one is called CLICKERS....
Its understandable not all folks will like every version of idlers/clicker games as there are a few I didnt like over the years as well.

I personally quite like this game.
Yes, it does require some attention, even late game. Not everyone wants a game where it is on the background at 99.9% of the time though.
As for the upgrades/buildings they really aren't that bad after you've ascended 2-3 times. I felt like they were prohibitively expensive my first round and by my third ascension I was drowning in them. So many I literally stopped knowing what to buy aside from what's needed for achievements.
Overall though I'd just say I don't mind the active gameplay. I can either turn the golden switch on and just let the game do its thing or I can sit it in the corner and click every golden cookie I see. I've done both and enjoyed both and I don't mind that the mid-game requires some thought instead of just idling for 500+ hours.
TL'DR - I enjoy that it's more active than other idle games but that I can turn it to idle mode whenever I get bored. And didn't find the grind to unlocking the idle side to be anywhere near as bad as a lot have said.
