This game is all that is wrong with gaming.
Think about it folks.
Not all that is wrong in gaming. But with gaming.

Clearly uncool. It's pretty passive to be honest. Cool is unique, cool is expressive, cool is assertive. Cookie clicker was unique but is now old news, it's extremely repetitive and serves only to substitute a void of boredom or menaingless existence with a faux sense of progression and it expresses nothing, it asserts nothing.

Looking back at most games I've played, they did not really impact my life much or give me any sense of meaning. Only a few did. If you can't relax with this game, or you don't like to optimize by using multipliers and mechanics to gain months worth of Cookies to actually finish the game 100% in a timely fashion, and then be on your way, then that's okay.

But most games serve very little purpose to gamers besides entertainment and some mind activity. The mind activity can be beneficial though.
We don't always want to be fully engrossed and distracted from reality, so cookie clicker is a nice distraction and break before you focus on real life again.

...but in the end, it has to be this way!

There are strategies involved and there's more to it than you might think when you see it for the first time, but sure, that describes this genre of games very well. It's basically a test of your patience.

Having said that, this isn't even close to the worst in gaming. There is no ingame shop and not even ads if you decide to buy it on steam.

Open the play store/app store on your phone if you want to get closer to the worst in gaming.

The cookies are a lie.
Let's see.

$5 game.
no microtransactions.
HUGE endgame.

Seems like a great game.
On the topic of lies, this steam review is a lie.

A "69" year old gamer who at the age of 68 when he got cookieclicker was suicidal because he couldn't "provide for his family" even though he's well into pension age and could get disability. His children are all 4 years of age, 2 from his previous marriage and 1 from his current meaning he was 65 when he had his first child. He says he played cookieclicker for a day or two but has 177 hours logged.

And this is the most upvoted recent review of the game.
It's remniscent of the types of comments ever more common on youtube where someone spells out some shorthand version of a tragic lifestory with a positive ending that gets 500+ likes. Or similar reddit posts about events that have never happened.

Yet people want it to be true. They want to feel a sense of purpose and and community with others, even in this ever more lonely world. We want to identify with something human or real and relate to others. It's just that it's all less and less real and soon these stories wont even be made by humans as AI will have learned how to make them better and more appealing.

Your cookies aren't real.
Your reviews aren't real.
Your achievements ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFJQ4En14hQ ) aren't real.

Stop playing cookieclicker and go bake some real cookies.
Then knock on your neighbors house or apartment even though you barely know each others name and share them.
When they bring you back a little token as a thanks, hang that up on the wall, for that's a real achievement.

In fact i barely know my neighbors with a few exceptions. I doubt any of us know each other that well. People who lived hundreds of meters away from each other in the past knew each other better than people who live on top of each other.

I should do that too. But we've made it weird.
This game is good because the code is good.

It's actually everything right with gaming.

It's creative and has multiple systems that interact.

What's wrong with gaming is multiple remakes and sequels built on the same tech . These have scripted interactions and well decorated hallways.

Cookie clicker has emergent gameplay that creates itself around player interaction.

Few games achieve this.

Cookie clicker inspired me to learn code, and better myself.

Currently in the early stages of my own runeclicker in the Godot engine . I want to make it a mix of cookie clicker, RuneScape and dwarf fortress.
it's really not that deep; its a game where you click to make cookies; its fun.

Unless you're using the shimmering veil, golden switch and other modifiers.
Take the poker out your arse

It has 0 emergent gameplay. Its endgame is at best some kind of spreadsheet simulator with a fancy UI. Which is a common criticism for some grand strategy games.
You´re trying to optimize this sense of progression in a simulated reality where cookies matter by buying, selling and clicking to see what will give you the most of these meaningless cookies that you´ve subconsciously given a meaning to.

Emergent gameplay is like minecraft where from relatively simple buildingblocks (literally) people create real social systems, alternative mini games, challenges, roleplaying experiences, etc.

I cant build a calcluator on a cookieclicker, I cant build a mini adventure game, I cant build real social relationships, I cant really roleplay anything, etc.
