Orteil himself has answered it multiple times so I think I'm paraphrasing pretty thruthfully to that one. As for the differences :
+ Steam version hasn't got any ads (tho those on the browser version are not rerally noticable).
+ Steam version supports the soundtrack, which is way easier to integrate in a separate software than in a browser where it alledgedly has detrimental effects (which I don't understand as I'm not a webdev).
+ Steam version allows you to display your achievements on your Steam account if you're one of those people who care about it.
+- Steam version and browser version are supposed to be updated at the same pace, tho browser version is still considered the "main" one.
--- Steam version costs 5 bucks, browser version costs you nothing.

Orteil himself doesn't seem to care wether you play one over the other. Wether you buy this one as a "show of support", "easier access to modding" or whatever. So if you don't have bought it already, know that you don't have to feel forced.^^

I tried the browser version, it was like 1999 all again!

I bought it on steam because it was cheap, plus the Dev gets some money.

One thing that this also has over the web game, unless it's been added in at some point, is cloud saving. You're not SOL if you loose your HD before a backup. (Haven't played the web game in years, didn't even know it was still running till I saw this on Steam.)

Lost my web gave 4 or 5 times over the time I played it. Not going to loose it again thanks to the cloud!

In terms of technical benefits, mainly it's just the music and the ease of cloud saves (you can always backup your web browser save and email it to yourself or something, but c'mon).

I mostly just bought it as a show of support though. My last ascension lasted over a year and I'm still checking in on the game every so often. Orteil deserved my $5. Up to you whether or not you think he deserves yours though, of course.

There's also one more difference, that being a difference in how Heralds work. On the web version, the amount of Heralds are equivalent to the amount of highest-tier patrons. Meanwhile, one Steam Herald is equivalent to 100 other players currently playing the game on Steam (usually always maxed out)
