"Botched harvest!"

I keep getting this notification whenever I try to harvest sugar lumps, and I haven't gotten any as of yet. What's going on?

Cause in the first 24 hour or 23 I don't remember correctly they only have a 50% chance to be harvested so you have to wait at least 1 more hour so that you are 100% sure to be able to harvest it

Because you have to wait till they ripened. They are mature after 20 hours aand after that you have a 50% chance of getting a sugar lump. You have to wait 3 more hours to get a 100% chance. After one more hour they will fall/harvest automaticly (resulting in you getting the lump even when offline) and it starts a new circle.

i found out the hard way wasting 2 sugar lump at the start

If you are ok with psuedo-save-scumming you can export your save right before attempting to harvest one, and if it fails, simply import the same and try again.

Why is it like this? Shouldn't the game incentivice harvesting it manually, rather than punish for that? I don't get it.

It does incentivice manual harvesting. If you wait for it to ripen and then harvest manually, you save an hour compared to if you wait for the autoharvest. What it doesn't incentivice is harvesting before the ripening is finished.

1 hour faster is only like 4% faster and would also require you to open the game at a very specific time to get the full benefit. That doesn't sound like much of an incentive.

I never said it was a great incentive, just that there is AN incentive.

I also don't understand why it's even possible to harvest an unripened sugar lump, when it's given a penalty that huge.
