Why buy it on steam?
Is there any reason to pay for it on steam instead of just running the browser version?

150+ hours no crashes, no problems. At all. Old hardware too.

OP already bought it, but for all others:

Supporting the developer
Steam Cloud
Steam Achievements (including the Shadow Achievements, except "Cheated Cookies Taste Awful")

That's the only reason, really. You can play it ad-free in the browser by using anti-ad tools that you always should run anyway to protect you from malware.

You can manually import and export saves, just like on the web version. The game is the same. So if you want to support Orteil but not use Patreon, or if you want to get the Steam Achievements, or use Steam Cloud, you should get it on Steam.

In my personal opinion the asking price is fair, but that wasn't the topic. Anything higher and it would be too much. I think as the focus is very much on idle, but also allows some active play, no price over 5 EUR would be justified as it is now. Possibly the Dungeons would change that.

I think that premium idle games such as this are allowed to ask for a small price upfront, but if they ask for a really high price they really need to be something special.
I paid more for idle games at least two times - but then am left with thinking it was too much, I should have waited for a sale. Even if the game is really good.

So, if you have not enough money or don't want to invest as much, wait for a sale or play the free version. If you want to support the developer, get it for 4 Euro.

EDIT: The Heralds work differently on Steam. Instead of Patreon based, they are based here on concurrent Steam users, with 10,000 unlocking the max potential. Currently there are 100 Heralds, which means at least 10,000 concurrent users are playing. So that doubles the income after likely the first or second prestige (depending on when you prestige and what upgrades you get). That isn't necessary for anything - I think the game was balanced without heralds in mind -, but is a nice bonus.

Legends say, that if you buy it on Steam and then make a topic in forums about why you should buy it, it not only support the developer and provide you with some fun features, but you'll also get quite a bank of Steam points from people saying how stupid you are asking why you should buy it.

You can then invest all those points into cookies and you'll be the last one laughing then.

I salute your big brain, my friend =)
