I hope it´s sarcasm
I'm as confused as you are. I saw this in my discovery queue and I was like...
- Look at screenshots : looks like a barebones indie cash-grab
- Look at dev : Squenix. Huh.
- Look at price : 30 bucks. Oh.
- Go check out a gameplay video : provides more questions than answers
Cue the intense confusion.
Are you referring to Yasumi Matsuno? If so, I'm impressed. Loved FFT, and had no idea he had worked on this game. I presumed it was all Hiroyuki Ito's doing.
No, the video provides all the answers. I can't understand what everyone is so confused about.
Oh, also wish there was more info readily available. Like the location of all special tiles. I know, I could just write it down on a notepad but that's so 80s.
Dungeon Encounters do not have well-thought game design. Like, the dungeons are not even randomized... There are stupid game designs decision all over the place (for example, they put Petrification enemies first, even before Poison, and do not give players anything to cure Petrification up to floor 7, while you get access to Poison cure in floor 0 but only encounter Poisonous enemies after floor 10).
More, this game:
- Do not reward experimentation: lack of build diversity (only after floor 50 that there are some choices in builds), you have to 100% complete the floor since you can easily miss out important skills (especially the passive). Etrian Odyssey or Persona never forces you to do this and you can beat the game while being outleveled up to 20.
- Exploration: the dungeons ARE NOT EVEN RANDOMIZED. HOLY JESUS. And the fact that you have to get crucial abilities means: A) you read guide or B) you explore 100%.
- Navigation skills: Etrian Odyssey even gives you A FCKING MAP that you can draw, type, do any shet on it. This game does not even have a NOTEPAD when it includes the stupid math puzzles.
- Much more random....: you know the only reason they do not throw outleveled or overpowered enemies to low level stage is because it is a horrible game design, right? Trying to do that may make some people feel 'unique', but it is actually dumb. (again, the Petrification and the Cat Buglar, and even the Cat Buglar is a stupid copy of the Reaper from Persona since it does not even alert the players that it is actually an end-game enemy).
- Last, simplicity. Look at Pokemon. Every dialogs are around 2-3 sentences, yet they have enormous world building and story. They are the pinacle of simplicity. Lacking a story or contents do not mean simplicity.
In conclusion? Just play Etrian Odyssey and you will find it better than this game in every aspect, except for the graphic. The reason I play this game is because I finish Q2 and I am so desperate for another Etrian game. Jesus, I did not expect much from this game, but I am still disappointed.
