Does anybody recognize this sigil?
*** SPOILERS AHEAD ***

Hey guys,

in the first store room we are greeted by an array of witchcraft and/or black magic items to possibly summon(?), or talk to a demon and ultimately cleanse it. I noted the Ouji board, along with 2 obvious items: Garlic & Smudge Sticks, which are used to cleanse and purify an area of evil demons.

It's becoming more evident to me that Hugo is a continuation of some sort of demon that assumes the bodies of people who practice black magic. This may be incorrect but it's all just theory crafting at this point.

I am wondering if anyone can recognize the sigil that is painted in the same storage room, and what type of beliefs does it come from? I've searched high and low, and even looked at the book that is on the table (Dictionary of Symbols) without finding any answers.

It seems like Jimmy was learning and dabbling in black magic as well to try and reverse the demon that is controlling him/hugo

I always had a couple questions that are slowly being answered by a bigger picture:

- Why does Jimmy want the Spirit Box so badly?
-- In the start he is found in the closet telling the spirits to shut up, but he can simply just turn it off

- Why is magic involved when it seems to remove immersion?

- What is the motive for hugo desiring to hurt and kill everybody

The sigil doesn't exist in the Goetia (the compendium of demons). It looks like a sigil made by the devs explicitly for the game. I did some digging and none of the sigils remotely matched it; even though it shares aspects with the demon sigils of the goetia.

That was my first place to look, too. I even checked the Crowley Version, as it has some addendum that crowley and his goons made up. His handnotes to the book of law didn`t get me any wiser. I also checked the Theurgia Goetia which features angels and spirits, still nothing, it doesn`t feature in the book of forbidden knowledge or the psedomonarchia daemonica (which to be frank is just a watered down version of salomonis lesser key), it`s not the art style of the grand grimoire (aka red dragon) but I also looked, just in case.

So yeah if it actually exists anywhere I would be thrilled to know. I am kinda interested in that kinda stuff.

I've only seen this sigil in one other place: a fantasy YouTube Originals series called Escape the Night , hosted by Joey Graceffa. Specifically, it's the symbol of the Society Against Evil. [escapethenight.fandom.com]

A friend and I looked for any appearance of it prior to the first appearance on the show, which was during Season 1, released in the summer of 2016 (this game was, IIRC, produced in 2017). We looked through a few different occult books and books on biblical symbols, but couldn't find anything. As far as we could both tell, it was created for that show, taking inspiration from the Goetia and similar texts.

Maybe the designers found it and just thought it looked cool...? Or maybe they put it in as some kind of reference? The themes of this game and of Escape the Night do kind of match up, not going to lie --- especially if you've only seen the first season.

Full disclosure: I haven't actually played this game; I just saw the symbol while watching a letsplay of it and was very surprised, to say the least! I've been an ETN fan for a few years now and was interested to see if anyone else had noticed it. I know this thread is a few years old by now, but I hope that this answer helps anyone who comes looking in the future!

Huh, that's interesting. Thanks for sharing. Devs probably used it as an easter egg for people who already know of the series; not an uncommon thing for videogame devs to do.

Hia! Bit late to the replies here, but the symbol is actually taken from an edition of "Simon Necronomicon" by Peter Devenda. It's from the spellbook portion in particular - which is where the illustrated seals for "The Fifty Names of Marduk" appear. The one on the storeroom wall/in the fictional series ETN is that of the Third Name: "Marutukku"

Basically it denotes a universal protection symbol. Presumably used in-game as a nod to whatever is possessing Jimmy and his attempts to shirk it?
