Make actual matchmaking rules in casual.
I'm level 3. They matched me up against a level 17 who wasted 5-10 minutes of my time and then beat me in one turn. I had 1 monster with around 1,500 attack, and by the end, they had 3 monsters with maybe 9,000 combined. Don't get me wrong; I don't mind losing, but for a game, there's not much playing involved when you waste 10 minutes watching someone do a bunch of mysterious things with cards and then the game is over. Fun factor there is exactly 0. If I wanted to watch someone play the game, I'd spectate. Give beginners a chance, and give veterans a challenge!

Levels don't mean anything.

I can make a fresh account be level 1, make a good deck that I know, shoot to plat easily.

Truth, they will leave for better games that respect its players and is not made to pump money into the shareholders that dont care about you aswell.

To be honest many player make a new account to instantly create a new deck they want.
And nope, what they make is not something similar to you in any way.
Something much more sinister 😅.

Their skill remains the same but their level back to the beginning.

That was the worse match up ever, I believe. You will face much more meta relevant deck that way.
Ranked matchup already divide player based on their current rank.

Casual doesn't have enough players to start discriminating who you match against

There is a name for people who does that. They are called smurfs. Now if you were 100% new to YGH you would have 0 knowledge on what to do while your opponent builds up his
''you scoop on turn 2'' board.

Back in my day, they weren't called smurfs. They were called twinks.

Good god, I remember that from my Burning Crusade days. Thanks, I feel old now.

Unfortunately the game is like this, a way to explain yugioh for me is that it's always have been who makes the opponent have less fun, even old yugioh had its toxicity, but don't give up entirely, you can still find a deck you like, hand traps are a way to stop some decks for them to not make a "10 negates board", the matchmaking system wouldnt work with levels bc pretty sure even high level people doesnt always mean strong player, it just means they played more time(maybe they even stopped and came back)

If you dont find a good deck that can play against the meta, then I suggest to at least play with friends, you can also use simulators to play the game without having to spend gems like edopro

Lmao I would bet I have more hours in various card games than you've been alive. Go play and let the adults talk, dear.

Anyway, disregarding the child, my issue is not with the complexity added to the game since I played it in the 2000s. I was simply suggesting something that I thought might help with a clear problem.

Sadly, now that I think of it, the previous posters make an unfortunate point about the smurfs. I don't tend to think about that outside of more action oriented games. (I am looking so hard at you, Overwatch.)

A quick duel option against AI of different levels might be nice even for veterans if they just want a fast match and don't want to wait for an opponent to move.

Any suggestions for a good deck or good cards to use as a starting point? I'm fond of dragons, but I also don't want to get completely steamrolled if the cards are underpowered.

Well here we go
What will u gonna build ? Your first deck it's the most important thing in this game and that's b'coz u'll get a lot of gems at the start that u wont get foward .Soooo there are 2 kind of players : the one who plays meta and strong decks :those only complain about MaxxC and sometimes about tears or BlockDragon and the others like to play (uwu) decks to complain about the game and konami , the meta, handtraps,(long list) also make funny theories about how should be changed the game to their liking (Choose)
Dragon decks mmmm
-Dragon Link
-Branded
-Bystial Thunderdragon
-Blackwing's boss monsters are dragon Synchro mostly
All those are good decks i was master 2 at lv 16 with Branded

Lucky for you, dragons are by far the strongest type in the game, with neverending support that regularly breaks formats. Outside of maybe cyberse, dragons are the only monster type where just playing a tribal pile is not only viable but competitive.

Bystials are ridiculous, but sadly you just missed their selection pack, meaning you would have to craft a bunch of SRs/URs to use them. Rokkets are often a core part of dragon link decks, but some people use dragunity or thunder dragons instead. Also the whole chaos package with chaos space, wyverburster/collapserpent, levianeer, the pendulum chaos emperor dragon, etc. Dragon cards are so ridiculously generically powerful that it would be kind of hard to make them not work
