The 90s and early aughts are littered with the graves of dead TCGs. Because it didn't take companies long to notice that a successful TCG is the closest thing this side of a casino to a license to print money. There's even a lot of TCGs that were based on popular anime and movies that didn't make it*.
I think the game quickly becoming the core product for YGO rather than just a cash-in really helped in that respect. Also while imperfect like all things under the sun, I don't think the original core design for Konami's YGO is BAD, which helped.
*I probably would have played the hell out of the Slayers game had it come state side even if it sucked.
I've heard the original version was better but the English release dumbed it down so much it removed any semblance of strategy or skill.
However besides that there are dozens of bad games that will die before long. Hearthstone clones out the wazoo.
Yugioh could be A LOT better with updated design practices and a revamp of its basic play. However it could definitely be a lot worse.
Yeah I was referring to the English version's initial release
It was probably a decision made by a corporate suit who doesn't like or understand the appeal of tabletop games. To a lot of people like that every game is either literally Chess (or perhaps poker) or it's Candyland, an entirely luck dependent exercise in random card pulling/dice rolling to distract children. Someone like that would probably think the game being more complex than "monster with higher points beats monster with lower points" would alienate the kids they were trying to sell to.

It has miserable pull rates the game isn't any better balanced I would actually argue it's worse and on top of that you have tons of highroll rng effects that feel bad
I was about to say I am surprised no one brought Hearthstone into the mix lol
Dang it.... Shadowverse is still not good?
