Stun
Ancient Gear, but you need a PhD to pilot it

Stun literally doesn't work going second. Most of your floodgates don't stop an already established board from running you over, to the point where you'll occasionally see combo decks run them themselves as a door slam.

really? it really does not seem harder than a normal combo deck (when playing against it)

I don't recall them ever mentioning Chronos having a PhD.

He spent like the whole first season bragging about it every opportunity he got...

edit: to clarify, I have no idea about the original, but at least in the English dub he did. It still stands that's the origin of the joke

He's very elitist, to be sure, but I don't recall them even once mentioning his own educational background. Granted, my Japanese is far from perfect.

Oh, that explains it. Yeah, you should never trust foreignized versions of anime/games etc., they are unreliable at best, and more often than not outright make things up because (due to how insane this industry is) they can actually charge content creators MORE money because "we're not just translating, we're LOCALIZING!" It's one of the greatest scams ever perpetrated.

We're talking about the dub not the original Japanese version

That does explain the disconnect, yeah. I do recommend watching GX at some point for you folks, it's a genuinely good show that, while I feel it does drag on in the latter half of Season 2 and most of Season 3, it really does all come together and make it all worth the journey in Season 4. It's honestly surprising how many hanging plot threads it resolves in only 24 episodes.

I don't, honestly my Japanese is far better than it was back then. That said, it doesn't change the origin of the joke.

Back on topic before I derail things further, my personal favorite going second deck is mikanko. You don't even have to totally break their board, in fact they thrive on your opponent being strong. Just be careful of universal negates

Good on you! You and me both, GX was one of if not the first show I picked up from Episode 1 watching raw as it aired, and I recently rewatched it and just had a blast picking up things I never got back then (like Don Zaruugu's disguise as a detective being "Inspector Magure" as a reference to Conan's Megure.)

Fair, just another example of how two people can talk about the "same" thing and be talking past each other when "localization" muddies the waters.
