Duel Links has been pay-to-win for a very, very long time. It's more or less impossible for a new player to get into without paying way out the ass.
There are other arguments for Master Duel, but I think that's probably the most relevant one.
I saw that they were almost entirely N/R rarity and contained within a single box that also had link staples (which were new at the time). I spent weeks grinding gems, dug through about 80% of the box without getting any of the N/R cards I needed, and never managed to complete the deck. Then at some point I had this realization of like, "What the ♥♥♥♥ am I even doing??"
DL is so much worse than any of us remember. I don't even know how I played it for so long. Desperation, maybe?
Now we have MD though so unless you really don't like actual Yugioh you never have to go back to DL.
Until they started nerfing skills whenever they felt like it.
They killed my competitive decks more than 4 times just by nerfing different character skills.
I stopped bothering. Also Master Duel sucks so ye there goes yu gi oh.
