For reference, other card games I've played are duel masters, pokemon, and currently one piece and the first 2 didn't stick with me so here I am playing this and one piece.
My Decks are certainly not optimal, but that won't stop me from playing them, regardless of what my opponent is using. And I have little desire to pick up or switch to an entirely different Deck unless I find something very intriguing about it or its cards/strategies and whether I can incorporate them into my own stuff.
1. Freedom of design. Yugioh can do whatever it wants. Unlike other games set in specific universes Yugioh covers an entire reality. You could literally make an archetype covering the reality of the players themselves and it would basically just be the anime with slightly less magic.
2. The resource system. I HATE lands. MTG is a fun game but the LANDS ruin it and every MTG clone ever. I have played a lot of land based card games and they all suck because whether you can play your cards or not is entirely RNG. That is unless you remove it from the equation using cheeky things which basically just say "play yugioh instead" on them.
The Energy systems where you get a point every turn like Legends of Runeterra does are ok but they still have this element of restraint where both players have to build up to the fun stuff every game. Generally turns 1-3 of such games are filler. Some do better than others like how LOR has a more simultaneous turn setup which results in more interaction and feeling like the first turns matter more because of it unlike games with summoning sickness and personal turns. Honestly it just feels like such games should start with 3 mana.
Actually that's a thought.. maybe someone should make an MTG or LOR style game but start with a few lands/energy on turn 1 instead of just 1. Let players actually start playing sooner.
Anyway point is Yugioh being only limited by the cards in your hand is why I love it the most. I don't have to worry about my resources and we can all combo off as much as we can. There is no downside to this method except that it requires the devs to keep things in check. Something Konami hasn't done super well unfortunately.
3. It has solid art. Not always the best and can sometimes be a bit dull to pander to a market but the variety means you still get awesome cards with awesome art on them.
Couldn't get into Duel Masters besides the jank GBA game and I never got into the one piece one but I do have a friend that plays it. I've played a handful of em including but not limited to Elder Scrolls, Infinity Wars, Elestrals and the new Digimon one so if you havn't tried those out, check em out.
I agree. Personally speaking I been trying to make fur hire work for YEARS and I missed when they were meta in duel links apparently and even though I have a distaste for Runick, I enjoyed playing the pair together since they worked SO well and that's really the beauty of it.
Keep doing you and enjoy the game how ya want. Unfortunately I don't have the time and motivation to experiment like I used to, hopefully that will change soon.
Yeah, unfortunately Konami dropped the ball on keeping things together but I feel they are improving, slowly but surely. But yeah I am an individual that likes card slinging instead of slowly building up. The lands and energy system from MTG and Pokemon is good in it's execution, however I just hate the feeling of needing specific cards and bricking on energy or vica versa so that is another point that I particularly like as well.
