Looking for a modern water Yu-Gi-Oh deck
I'm an older generation player who is returning and would like information on how I can create a modern version of a Umi deck, such as A Legendary Ocean.

I was somebody who used an A Legendary Ocean / Gravity Bind / Level Limit - Area B in combination with Amphibious Bugroth MK-3, Penguin Soldier, Star Boy, etc.

It doesn't have to be Meta, but up to par with current standards of a deck so it could win. I'm at a lack of knowledge with the current pace of the game, and Gravity Binds and Penguin Soldiers aren't going to get me anywhere.

Thanks for any help, cheers.

(I'm also okay with any and all variations related to the water attribute)

Umi control would be perfect for you, its not meta but its still a very strong deck, here is a list you can copy: https://www.masterduelmeta.com/top-decks/duelist-cup-dlv.-max/december-2023/umi-control/quirkyear/VUbA2

I've been playing since the beginning, so I'm pretty "old school". It kinda helps though if you have at least a playstyle in mind? If you like stun stuff, you could go for Labyrinth. If you liked penguins...you might like floo? i'm gonna be honest, I don't totally get floo myself, but their birds and they turn your normal summon up by 8.

If you want to stick to water themes, Ice Jade seems cool. Gishki got some upgrades if you go back to gravity bind era, so did ice barriers for that matter. I wouldn't really recommend those as they will get stomped in ranked, but can be fun for solo and friends.

Since you like returning gimmicks, maybe time lords. Do you have a specific type of style you want to play? I personally like the dirty OTKs, so I got into Mikanko and Lyrilusc, but using those won't make you popular.

edit: GDI, I totally skipped over water in the title, even though I read your post. Sorry, give me a second to recommend mainly water stuff

Edit 2: Ghoti, Floo, Ice Jade are the ones that I recommend for water themes. I think Marinecess is cute, but I doubt you're looking for that and it won't help you against competent decks. One I don't know much about but it can help you dip into synchro plays is Crystron

Almost every card you mentioned actually has a modern retrain. There was a whole TCG set not too long ago that included modernized versions of kairyu-shin, fiend kraken, fortress whale, etc. as well as support cards that treat themselves as umi. I do believe the deck still plays a legendary ocean though. It has a play style very much like what you described, focused around controlling/floodgating out of the game and chipping away with recurring monsters every turn

Seems like Rank 4 Sharks is your calling.

I hate how I miss the most obvious things like these...

A Legendary Ocean gets the nod over the other Field Spells solely because you have additional copies in the form of that one monster that technically doesn't work in the rules.
You can still play Umi and you can still play Penguins, they got new support in recent years

Oh, Tearlaments are mostly DARK but they're all Aqua, does that count? Similarly, Suships are FIRE Aqua.
Probably the best Water deck where you actually get to play (aka not stun like Umi Control) would be Marincess.

Due to it's nature as a deck, it's very interactive with the opponent, and is a solid rogue option.

Umi Control might be something you might want to look into.

The Video below is a bit outdated but does give you an idea on how the deck is played.

Marincess is another water deck that good. It is more combo based so you'll learn how modern yugioh is played.
