When did the game become this trash?
I am by no means a veteran but simply enjoyed watching yuhioh anime as a kid and playing the card game on and off over the years. I tried duel links a few years ago and never got into it. I see Master duel and think... mhmm maybe this is good. BUT for the love of kami, how tf can u summon endless monsters like that??? Where is the limit in this? How am I supposed to enjoy the game when my oppenent just finishes the game in the first turn? I dont mind losing a game but please make it enjoyable. I can make myself a cup of coffee and watch a youtube video and this mf would still be busy playing!!! Even the old GB advance versions was more enjoyable then this. Oh and shout out to the people that actually plays the damn game like a normal person and still ends up winning or losing. You the real mvp. These ranked and event duels are pure garbage, unless there is a limit to what a player can do in a single turn.

Blame powercreep and lazy card designers.
Sadly the only limits for oppenent is the timer

This game is not trash, you're just bad.

This is what freedom of speach feels like ^

You reminded me of League of Legends where you can troll all you want and stay 0 kills 10 deaths, but once someone flames you he get's banned.

Same applies to real life, you can thrash talk other people, but once they punch your face they get in jail.

Imo it happened as soon as Komoney figured out how to play their own game.

Once a person punches me in the face over words, they're not proving me wrong instead they show they fear what I have to say.

It's my understanding that the current paradigm started around 2008-2010, respectively Tele-DAD and Infernity. It's also my understanding that FTKs were rampant prior to that because the counterplay literally didn't exist yet.

Simply put, there's only three things stopping the opponent from playing every card in their deck turn 1. First, hard once-per-turn effects that are sadly not present on a lot of cards that they really should be. Second, the Turn Timer that will force a loss if they try and make their combo go infinite. Third, the overabundance of negate-effect cards that both players have access to.

Thing is it's all symmetrical. You, a newbie learning or re-learning the game, have just as much ability to create the exact same kind (or even a card-for-card clone) of any deck that you might rage at. Master duel is generous enough to new accounts to let you do that, it only becomes pay-to-win if you spread your starter gems and CP too thinly across too many deck options, or if you're returning to the game after walking away for a format or two.

For a newbie, the best thing you can do is pay attention to what kind of decks your opponent's playing. Save a recording of a deck that catches your interest so you can go back over the game and take a closer look at the cards and plays they're making. Save your CP for crafting staples that just about any deck can use first, things like Ash or Maxx C. Only buy packs in bundles of 10, and go for the "secret packs" when possible over the Featured packs. Lastly, manage your Salt. When you get tilted, you play like garbage regardless of the decks involved. Walk away before you get worked up over losing, because you will lose A ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ LOT while you're learning the ropes.

Yes, that's a hell of an onboarding for new players. Konami does not seem to particularly care about the new player experience, so that's what you're stuck with.

Is it ever be for everyone tho?

Pretty sure 2004 WCS winner literally playing chaos deck with banishing + floodgate support.

A competitive yugioh never meant to be an anime counterpart lol.

The trash aspect of it is the new/returning player experience. You perfectly summed up the helplessness of not understanding what is going on and feeling a completely one-sided experience as a result. "Real" yugioh played at venues for prize cards or boosters already looked like this as soon as the game developed its own identity, with a bit more fluff of setting and passing between the combo plays. 2004 already had tournaments between decks that could rip half your hand before you got to play and decks that could kill you in one turn.

The only things that changed since then are the complexity of interactions, maximum acceptable power ceiling, and the paint on top of whatever is fundamentally happening. Doesn't matter if it's serpentine metallic "dragons", angry birds with guns, or anime girls in mech suits. This has always been what the game was aiming for. But if you're going to skip 20 years' worth of catching up and expect things to stay the same, idk what to tell you, you set yourself up for failure
The real argument here is what is even the state of the game now? The game did not become magically improve after Tear got its fangs removed, far from it. YGO gets worse from Tear onward with the OCG just about seeing daylight with DUNE and Kash and Tear are still very playable and Purrly is not the deck I want to see myself playing BUT Rescue Ace is Tier 2 and I would love to play that.

Bear in mind, I do not mind Tearlament and I think those sirens got it going with the support they got within their own archetype but now we are about the get Bystials and those are just mean. It is somewhat funny that despite the hits to Tear which affected U.A. harder I can still play U.A. but if you play Live Twin, Mathmech or even Eldlich ( I think even Labyrinth is hit by the Bystials too) you are going to hate what's coming, the bystials played a fundamental part in making both the TCG and the OCG not fun to play at all.

Since Meta gaming happened. Meta Gaming being highly frowned upon in gaming communities, meta gaming is a strong violation of gaming etiquette but players are all to happy to continue pushing meta because they feel some sense of satisifaction in winning that way. When they are only cheating themselves. The reality being that the majority of players wouldn't have knowledge about most decks or strategies, now any random player who is completely new to the game can look up a deck recipe for a meta deck, if they have enough gems or money to buy them spam the packs they need till they have all the cards for the deck. Look up the strategies and then beat players who have been around forever and had to learn everything and relearn new the styles.
