Is this a pvp only competition?
Or is this something with a progression story or maybe something with random npc duels?
I played the old gameboy games a lot, but absolutely don't want to play any pvp

Master Duel is primarily a PvP focused game, there are solo modes based around different archetypes where you can use your own cards or in-theme loaner decks, but it's not to the same level as other YGO games in terms of singleplayer content. As people will likely soon recommend, stuff like Legacy of the Duelist or Duel Links might be a better experience if you aren't really looking for PvP gameplay.

It's PVP focused.

As you said, Legacy of the Duelist a good choice for casual players who want to do PvE. It is probably the best game currently that I can think of for PvE Yu-Gi-Oh. It is a real shame that it's UI is really lack-luster because it's a port and the animations are even slower than Master Duel. That being said, anyone just looking to try out some cards that came out up to VRAINS will probably enjoy it.

For the OP: If you want to just enjoy Master Duel as a more PvE experience, just stick to silver/gold, Then you can just do missions there and do PvE in the campaign while having access to the newer cards; though, any Meta-tier deck will probably crush the AI.

The main focus is to play yugioh against other players. There's some duels against AI but they're isn't a ton of them. Most of the solo content is just lore about certain archtypes.

It is primarily PvP. There is a Solo Mode but as others have said it's not very big. You're better off finding friends to play casual games with, but sooner or later you will have to interact with Online Ranked games if you want gems to build decks.

Solo mode basically works as a tutorial with a bit of lore.

There is no such thing as PvE in YGO, it's PVP still, only facing an AI and not a person
