The Main ranked mode is very modern and competittive you can use older style decks in solo mode as freely as you please. If your interested in old school yugioh w others you may have to search some discord servers but there are plenty of groups that play anime decks and such. As for whether you should play its really up to you and what type of card games you enjoy can't hurt to try tho

This game doesn't have much in the form of an older/lower power level PVP mode, but there is a pretty decent-length solo mode where you can play at your own pace with loaner decks. It is updated pretty slowly though, we get one new solo gate every month or two and there's only a couple duels in each. Outside of that it only really focuses on the ranked mode that plays at the modern pace, and unfortunately the game doesn't do much to help with the whiplash of a new/returning player trying to compete there. I'd say it's worth it to at least try the solo to see if you like the gameplay, but outside of that you would probably have to find a group or friends to play with if you want to stay at a custom power level

I don't think Master Duel is for you it is mostly turn one meta combo decks on ladder they sometimes do "classic events" where the decks you speak of can shine but those can be really rare.

If I had a suggest a game for you it would be Duel Links:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/601510/YuGiOh_Duel_Links/
It is basically like Master Duels but you play as a character from Yugioh you start of as Yugi or Kaiba and can unlock more characters just by playing. My only warning is that this game is filled with micro-transactions and building a deck with money can cost A LOT. But the PvP has a lot of anime match ups so that is a positive also a lot of anime decks are boosted by things called "skills" they are out of duel effects that encourage you to build pure decks and not just splash in a lot of generic goodstuff.

My second choice would be Legacy of the Duelist:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/480650/YuGiOh_Legacy_of_the_Duelist/
Basically a "greatest hits" of Yugioh letting you replay iconic duels from each series as the characters using the iconic decks the piloted however the big negative to this game is it is pretty much exclusively single player and the AI duelists are really easy to cheese or break with custom decks and some anime matchups are pretty much unwinnable unless you top deck a good starting hand.

The last thing I could suggest is maybe try and find a Master Duels casual discord or "anime roleplaying" server where people only use anime themed decks or weaker more fun and casual decks but each one of those servers have their own rules and own power levels so it is up to you to go and "shop around" for a server to join.

Mostly yes its a bunch of fun as long you stay away from the meta-creep-hardcore decks. Means. Yeah play to gold 1 easily but then fall back... My general advice. In gold 5-1 you can play a cool deck and meet cool opponents decks. everything above is just powercreep sweeting...

how much do you value your mental health? if you value it a lot don't spend too much time in ranked or the duelist cup

This version of the game has a bunch of new stuff, some of which will probably seem questionable to you. Some of the powercreep still seems broken to veterans as well.

However, I still suggest giving the game a try.
Even if you will sometimes get matched with a meta deck that leaves you unable to play at all, you can still have fun building our own unique, gimmicky, or themed decks, and use them against people in the Gold rank, where meta decks are less common.

Give it a try, it's free and won't take up that much time to try it out, the game is pretty generous to new players so no reason not to try it.

i would say get on do your missions and get off nothing but meta and a long wait until you can play because your opponent spends 15 mins until u get a turn and by then they already won

Be warned, there will be plenty of times where you lose the duel SIMPLY because you lost the coin toss.

And if you see Verte, cuss the mofo out because he deserves it. (that card is AIDS)
While everyone are saying ranked play is the focus. The game does have a casual match queue and you're able to create a duel room where you and your friends are free to play whatever decks you like vs each others.

There isn't just ranked and only ranked.

Thank you all for the help. I liked the idea that you can create a duel room where you can play any deck with your friends so i might give that a try but i'm not really interested in ranked :D Maybe might get the Legacy of duelist on sale as mentioned above.

atm the gaia deck is for sale, so if you wanna play some good old yu-gi-oh with friends i would recommend it, if you buy it 3 times there is a deck that could carry you to plat, at least if you want to. But even if you just wanna have some time with friends: I recommend this deck from my depest yugioh heart :D Its not "meta" but it has some really good combos, if you know to handle them ;)

If you are fans of YGO like me but nt hardcore player, this is definitely yes for you.
I play blue eyes, gods, dark magician deck at first. Never really try to climb any match.
There are many solo mode to let you try & learn others deck and archtype.
Not really need to spend a lot of time to clear daily.
Normally i clear it once 3 days.
BTW if you like dark magician, you can purchase 3x structure dark magician deck only cost 1500 gem and it is quite powerful.

But if you really care to WIN. You need to learn some modern handtrap and usual combo.
Below is the card can almost fit in any deck.

Maxx C
Infinite Impernence
Crossout designer
Nibiru, the primal being
Effect veiler

By the way, that version of "Legacy of the Duelist" is bad and outdated. You want the Link Evolution version to get more content for less money ($100+ worth of DLC for free). It's still a little outdated, but it's from right after the banlist that massacred the Eternal Format instead of being stuck pre-Link (and if you don't use Pendulum MR4 doesn't matter by that point).

Legacy of the Duelist Link Evolution would be your best bet.

Oddly, I would say the next best thing is to not get into this game at all. Once you're in, you never really seem to quit on a permanent basis.
