2v2 possible?

Stupid question but just wanted to make sure:
What can I play with my buddy here? Is a 2v2 mode planned / available?

There is a team battles mode, but it's not what you are asking for, you just have groups of 3 (or 3 randoms) playing 1v1 games against each other and the team with the most points wins. They probably aren't going to ever implement this, for the same reason they don't have best of 3 matches: it could easily take 20+ minutes just to get to the 4th player's turn, and decks clash in so many different ways that there would be no feasibly way for randoms to find teammates that work together properly.

Cards also have clauses and restrictions that were never intended for more than 2 people, it would require a bunch of erratas and its own separate banlist due to how many "once per turn" effects could be abused with 4 or more people

Well because Konami would rather respond to shareholders than it's own community we won't know if they have something in the works unless it gets leaked. There is at least a ygo program out there that lets you Tag Duel (the 2v2 thing you are looking for) in it's system but as of right now Master Duel sadly ain't it for the foreseeable future. I am not sure the name of the program but a friend showed me a video of some vtubers playing it recently.
