State of Decay 2 is the closest thing to a true open world survival craft TWD game there is, although it can be jokey and lighthearted at times. The main game is not story focused outside of some endgame stuff and an optional game mode.
The first State of Decay game is 100% story focused but is an absolute chore to play and does not perform well on modern hardware despite it's age. 1440p is unsupported and 4k glitches out the shadows despite being supported. Even despite the games age, it will not have high fps, even with a 3090 I struggled to get 100+ on low settings 1080p. It runs great on the steam deck though.
If you have a steam deck and/or exclusively play in 1080p 60fps you might actually have a good time with State of Decay 1 and it might be what youre looking for in a story focused serious zombie game.
its actually what got me into zombie games again to get the definitive edition of *this* game
