Complaint about continuity
So I know at the start of the game, it tells you that the events of the first game don't matter in this one, but still I think it is worth pointing out a critical flaw in the story of this game. That being that Date had Aiba missing for an extended period of time in the story as she was with Mizuki, as per the previous game, we know that the body shown as Date in this game isn't actually Date's body, it is the body of Seijima's son, and the issue with that was the physiological defect that was in the body which caused him to take pleasure from killing, and in the first game part of Aiba's function was to manage the chemical balance of the body so that Date wouldn't feel a compulsion to kill people. Then explain to me, how could Date in this game go more than 6 years without Aiba managing the body without becoming a serial killer? It just feels like the people who made this game didn't actually care about the source material to let something so obvious slide. Maybe I'm just complaining about something that doesn't matter, I am disappointed with this sequel overall so I'm not in the best of moods.

the explanation for Date's appearance in this game is that he's wearing a really convincing mask of Saito's face... which is a different problem entirely.

"How could Date... go more than 6 years without Aiba managing the body..."

It is explained rather early in Ryuki's first interaction with Date that, Date was only wearing a silicone face mask resembling that of Saito (citing reasons somewhat jokingly that people knew him by the face and it's more popular with the ladies) - the body he resided in, was not that of Saito, but Date's original and "normal" one.

I'd agree that this game warrants critique in many respect, this particular point, they did address.

Ahh I see my bad, I thought I was paying fairly close attention to the dialogue in game but I suppose I must have missed this somewhere. Thank you for the correction.

another thing to note, date and falco have the same japanese voice actor, so the mask argument is more valid when you ignore the fact both of them have diffrent actors in english.

Another continuity issue is the usage of the Prototype Psync Machine . It apparently doesn't require removing the eyes .

It's said that it can be used without completely severing the left eye, it's just that Saito disposed of his previous hosts, making re-socketing the left eye pointless; plus both the Psyncer and Psyncing subject have to undergo the process, making Saito's parasitism less obvious.

The point was that when we use it to sync with Tearer , there's no way for the machine to work if it is used like it is in the first game because we obviously can't remove his mask.

During the process. The eyeball must be removed (not sure if right or left). You can return the eyeball after the process , which is what I meant.

I can't recall, at the time, was Tearer's face mask broken in half revealing one side of his face? then his eyeball would've been available to be temporarily removed

I'm pretty sure that his mask was fully on. Either way, we don't see his eyeball removed at that moment. I always rationalized this inconsistency as ABIS deciding to update the machine, so it would work without eye removal.

hmm yeah, I just checked, Tearer had his full mask on, it wouldn't be possible to remove it without explosion:

Gen's sync bothered me too because nobody said anything about his mask blocking his eyes. There was a mention of this potentially being an issue during the "masked woman" psync, but they had a handwave answer for that one. They just ignored it entirely for Gen.

Since the first game revealed that the psync machine works using nanocables, it makes sense that the cables could go through any mask. The only one that could be called into question is situations where the prototype psync machine was used, since it doesn't use the nanocables.

I don't think the nanocables are explicitly mentioned to be *that* small. They only need to be small enough to slide around the eye and enter the back of the socket. Thin enough to slide through tightly-woven fiber? Eh... I'm just not sure I buy it. It could be an answer though, I guess.

On another topic - I also find it odd that no one had anything to say about Komeji's cube head. As far as I remember, he's the only one who brings attention to it at all in a single line. Everyone else just kinda treats it like it's normal.... but why? We have another character, Gen, who has a "strange" appearance and it's discussed multiple times and is a central part of his character. Komeji has a normal-looking family. Is it not genetic? Seriously, what's up with it? It doesn't ruin the game or anything, it's just weird.

that has to do with the artist who visually designed some of the characters, he likes hyper-exaggerating features sometimes, like Ota's dad in the first Somnium Files... sidenote, I came across some interesting articles about character development:

Scenario Writer Uchikoshi-san, Lead Planner Okada-san, and Miyokawa from Famitsu deep dive into the unsolved mysteries of AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES!

Ota's original design looked so goofy:
