As a general advice, you can only have 1 trait on piece of gear of any given category (triangle, square, 8-shaped green one, etc) other than circle ones. It is a weird system system but I assume it should ensure that you do not put too many traits affecting your character's performance on single piece of gear.
Also, not every piece of gear can have every possible traits. I'm not sure if this is true for weapons but armor pieces have different options for sure. I could freely move the one elemental damage trait I found to various weapons. I used it on straight swords, spears and dual swords just fine.
If you have used your lightning enchant on other weapon, you will see it as a grayed option in the embedment selection screen but you will not be able to use it. There should be number in top right corner of the enchant name indicating how many uses you have available.
