"Hammer not so much." The rock flinging martial arts skill would like to talk to you. It does more break/spirit damage than a fully charged spirit attack and it can be used at range and it can be done as a rapid fire move. Best part? It's FAST!
Impregnable Keep with axe/hammer is really strong. It's a block => counter move and it's not slow at all and does a huge amount of damage, it might even be the hardest hitting martial arts move, or is certainly up there near the top.
Another thing about axe, is you don't ever use the standing light combo, the first swing is way too slow, but if you do a running light, it comes out a lot faster. So, running light => light => heavy => rock crash, if the enemy can be stunlocked. Even for small windows a running light into another light works fine, or simply go with a single heavy. Or counter with impregnable keep and straight up oneshot a lot of mobs that need a combo of hits into a fatal strike to drop with a lot of other weapons (like dual blades). Also, the weapon switch combo into axe is pretty good.
Nothing says you can't use a weapon like axe or hammer and pair it with a weapon like dual blades to use in a variety of situations. That's one of the reasons why I mained earth stat, because there are axes, hammers, spears, halberds, and even dual blades that have top scaling with earth. If you need to stop attacking really fast in order to deflect a red, then a faster hitting weapon would be ideal in that scenario. Good thing they let you use 2 weapons and swap them on the fly huh?
I love that move with the axe. I usually combine it with sandsink because the AI almost always immediately attacks after that. Except when they decide to do a red instead which is still unblockable even by that move. And on NG+ that will get you killed.
Yes I'm aware. I've used everything in the game except all the graces/set bonuses.
Sometimes you can just spam jumping light attack with the axe. It's really goofy but also really effective.
But I hope you can also see kinda the problem that the player has to throw out the standing light combo entirely to be effective. The most basic combo in the game for all weapons is not viable for axe. That's bad.
