In the first phase he staggers to anything you do. You can pretty much spam your normal attack chain and use your spirit attack after each chain and you'll be fine. The only thing you need to be wary of are his red attacks, which you'll want to deflect.
In the second phase you're not supposed to actually "beat" the boss. You just want to survive until your divine beast gauge is filled up and then activate it, which will end the encounter.
The easiest way to do this is to simply play passively. You can block (LB/L1) his regular attacks if you're not comfortable deflecting them and then deflect his red moves until he is stunned, at which point you can do a special attack. Rinse and repeat 3-4 times and your divine beast gauge should be full and ready to use, which will end the fight!
The moment i saw this message, I beated the bosse like you said.
You can revisit the first level by selecting the 'Travel' option at any Battle Flag. Just be aware that you won't have the NPC for any revisits and will have to full deplete Zhang Liang's health to defeat him on revisits.
Also depending on how heavy you are, the timing for deflecting will be affected
Sum Quantum big brain knowledge....I know.
