You can also have 2 invaders (there is an option to disable invasions if you don't want to be invaded while playing solo or in co-op).
That means a total of 5 players max in the same game.
I remember Nioh 2 can form party 1st and gather in a tea house.
Then just everyone depart together to a mission
From the official FAQ on their website:
"What types of online multiplayer are available?
There are three types, including the co-operative mode "Recruitment"
1. Recruitment: Cooperative play with up to 3 players (including yourself) (note from me: here I think it's more like you summon people to join you just for one mission)
2. Co-op: Up to 3 players (including yourself) can play together through a friend or set password. (note from me: here it's more like the classic Nioh co-op where you can play multiple missions together and do your stuff together even after completing a mission)
3. Invade: Invade another player's mission as an enemy or be invaded by an enemy.
In the Options menu, allowing online players to Invade can be enabled or disabled."

You can also check this video giving some information about co-op:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCudWilKS3M&ab_channel=VideoGameLoop Around 1 min they are joining by password, like it would be in Nioh. It seems both players are in their mission before joining each other but I'm pretty sure it will be possible to prepare this from a "lobby" (like it would in Nioh where you were all sitting in a tea house), in addition of doing it during a mission like it is shown here.
It's a shame about invading being optional, but it's probably a smart decision. However, if Fromsoft invasions are anything to go by, most people will turn it off. Hopefully they aren't stupid like Fromsoft to lock content behind invasion only items. If the gameplay is good, unlike Dark Souls pvp combat, then people should enjoy invasions. But it's already set up for toxic failure and abuse if they allow unbalanced 3v2.
I greatly missed Nioh 1's pvp. When it was a stable connection, they had a very good system for the Skill category. The Strength category immediately fell into player abuse and lost players quickly because it was not balanced. Which was sad because taking in your own armor and setup if it wasn't broken was fun. I also liked being naked and fist fighting which you could only really do in Strength. There were some accolades for doing that too. Composure skill!
Dark Souls invasions are interesting but always badly implemented in Fromsoft games that got worse in each iteration. DS2 was the only one to do it right. I heard the newest Snipe Elite 5 also implemented invasions and that seems cool.
But anyway, that's cool. I can't wait to help people and give invasions a try in this game. That's where they could really show up Fromsoft on how to do it properly.
