There's no comprehensive guide that I've found either, but their in-game descriptions are pretty good at telling you the basics of what they'll do, Support Type Followers like Hinoa or Galleus will use lots of buff and healing items, well rounded followers like Fiorayne and Rondine tend to use traps and stuff like Flash Pods effectively. More combat oriented followers like Utsushi, Fugen and Jay use lots of hunting helpers.
Really, your best bet is to just take whatever followers and just pay attention to what they do and what you like best.
- Fiorayne throws healing powder at you as soon as you take a hit
- Hammer Followers can contribute to the stun gauge
- Jae and Rondine use traps
- Fogen trolls you by waking up sleeping monsters with an explosion toad :D
- Galleus has tremendous swag
- Utushis Hunting Horn has ele damage boost
All followers have different approaches on how to use barrel bombs on sleeping monsters:
- place always 2
- place one every time the hunter places one
- place one the first time the hunter places one
- never place any
2. Luchika for ranged, Fiorayne with SnS
and then everyone else
I personally just go Hinoa/Minoto HH and drink in the buffs and healing.
