It would be better if you tell us what is your issue? There are different playstyles and also very generic Gunlance builds.
E.g. I like to use Evade Extender for mobility and Wirebug Whisperer to have the counter skill ready faster. Avoid crit skills as they are not compatible with your shelling. And then, what kind of shelling do you prefer?
Its... not exactly an issue but more like.. i am not sure how to start on making a gunlance build.
I am confused on the difference between wide/long shelling and the levels plus not sure if i should go for raw dmg or elemental dmg.
As for gear skills... i am 100% lost on that.
Gunlance bros rise up!
Hm. Okay. So basics.
First thing first: the different shellings have different effects. But that is for advanced users who can already dish out high damage by normal usage before making use of the shellings to aim at toppling and stunning the monster with intent.
Start off with a normal one, so you can make yourself familiar with the basic combos. And once you got that, you can experiment more.
I suggest these skills
Evade Extender
Stun Resistance
Guard Up Lvl 2
Wirebug Whisperer
The rest goes into attack or defense, or whatever else you feel normally fancy.
Elemental goes somewhat towards the same directiion as critical. If your shellings are your main damage output, you want max raw damage and measures to keep your weapon as long as possible sharp and strong. Hence the mastery of the guard skill, which also sharpens your weapon in the process, is a must.
Afterwards: again - depends on the playstyle you fance.
If you look at it, a build is very easy, as it is pretty generic and in most cases your existing builds for your other weapons can be used as basis.
Do you have already a good grasp of the basic combo?
- Artillery + Load Shells (2) are pretty much the most important offensive skills you can get. You can even get away with only using that and nothing else honestly for offense, a huge part of your damage comes from your explosions, and those two make sure you get the biggest ones and the most of them.
- For other offensive skills, the standard attack up and affinity increases work just fine as well. But I'd say going full on 100% affinity with crit boost is a waste, your explosions do not crit and do not scale with attack so it's not nearly as effective to use those skills with gunlance. I'd treat everything other than artillery and load shells as luxury because of this as you can only extract their benefit partially with a gunlance, while other armor skills will still benefit you 100%.
- I personally loved using evade extender. Gives you a huge mobility boost and helps to get into a good position or get out of the monster's way. It just made the weapon feel so much better to play for me.
- Since I love using bullet barrage I always ran Wirebug Whisperer to maximize it's usage, helps with other silkbind moves as well.
- Protective polish helps a lot too because you go through sharpness extremely fast with gunlance.
That was my personal take on the gunlance, every other armor skill after this was an optional bonus. I didn't actually use any guard skills or guard up, evade extender makes it easy enough to straight up avoid monsters, and the shield is already strong enough to function as a last resort as is. Also one extra tip: the augments (I think those were called rampage skills?) for the weapons that increase damage done to certain types of monsters are extra good on gunlance, since they also affect the damage of your shells and other explosions too! And as I've described, all offensive skills only boost one aspect of the weapon's damage. This one is the only one that boost ALL of it, so it's extremely useful and yous should always have it on your weapon.

Others like Arekz Gaming and Gaijin Hunter in general have good guides too.
But on a superficial level, the build for Gunlance is similar to CB:
- Artillery boosts your burst damage
- Load shells adds an extra burst "round", so a bit of extra "free" damage
- Evade Extender is always good on such a weapon
- Sneak attack also boosts I think you burst damage
- I'm not sure about Guard Up, but I think you need one point too, since there was at least one attack I couldn't block, but maybe I should have dodged it
Wide has the fewer amount of burst rounds, long has a medium amount and normal a high amount. The fewer the rounds, the bigger individual damage for a single round. Long and normal are about full burst combos. I listened to the guide's advice and stuck with long and normal.
Edit: I also like this guy's guide, they are 5 minutes and it gets you started with the weapon.

Rurikhan's guide you linked is the best way to go if you're a beginner and you want to get into the weapon, it was also a first place for me to go to learn how to play it properly and it really helped me understand what I was supposed to be doing in the first place, then develop my own style. Highly recommend watching it too.
Thank you again for the information :)
True. I am using Artillery myself, while Load Shells is definitely also nice to have. I think I neglected it because of the cost.
How is your experience with the ray attacks from Rajang e.g.? In regards you not using Guards Up, I mean. Can you still block it with the silkbind skill?
Funny thing, I actually have no idea. I don't think I ever even tried to block it, I just hop away into next week with Evade Extender
I kind of at least spend a hour or so in training room whenever i want to learn a new weapon first before i even start on making a build for it.
Ah, okay. That is viable option too of course. Maybe I am just too used to it since the combo lets you get away unscathed and looks very cool. Speaking of which ~

In the video I have linked you can see the basic combo in action. That was pre-Sunbreak and I picked for myself the arachne-gunlance for the high shelling level of the weapon, which is also important for the damage.
High shelling Level
Number of shells <-> Load Shell skill
Damage by Attack Stat
Damage by Artillery skill
Wirebug Whisperer for the frequent usage of the silkbind skills to maximise damage
Also, check - depending on the weapon, whether more sharpness or a higher level of attack skill is more beneficial for you - but that would be when you are more advanced with the weapon of interest.
It is a good approach - however - by my experiencing I recommend you training by monster.
That is because of what you are mentioning there ~
At some point, learning a weapon means also learning a monster movements. Only with both you get to the point you want.
For Gunlance, I recommend strongly for beginners to train with Barroth. With the basic combo, and the fact that Gunlance's shelling ignores defense, you will have your greatest progress and joy in learning that weapon.
