How often should I be changing my weapons/upgrading them in my skill tree?

I am using the long sword and am hunting monster lvl 6s. I am not having too big of an issue yet, but I have only upgraded my long sword from the first tree (defender tree I believe) to the second and last weapon on that tree, then upgraded that.

Am I supposed to be utilizing the weapon tree more and picking up different elemental weapons?

If youre still in Low Rank, the Defender Tree is only good until high rank (and even then, most weapons have stronger alternative at that point). If youre in Low Rank, it's still probably okay to use Defender, but if youre in High Rank, you should look into other options, preferably with higher Raw Damage.

Awesome! For some reason I thought I was at the higher ranks :O

Yeah, 6* village quests are still low rank, meaning you'll eventually get to HR which is only located in the hub.
Once you get to it, however, you will need to change gear, like the two said
