MONSTER HUNTER RISE

MONSTER HUNTER RISE

(Feedback) Keyboard controls are very cumbersome, here's why and how to fix it.
MH Rise should in theory be totally fit for a K+M control scheme. But due to the way the developers chose to implement keyboard support, it's far more cumbersome and complicated than it needs to be.

The main problem is you're not just assigning actions to keys, you're assigning controller inputs to keys. This is NOT how it should be done for a MULTITUDE of reasons. MHW was guilty of this as well and i was hoping it would be fixed with Rise.

First and foremost: Let's say i want to throw out a sinkbind attack. How do i do this? Well, by default, i hold middle mouse to ready my silkbind reticle, hold a direction key to choose where to send my move, remember whether the attack i want is bound to the left or right mouse button, and click. This is NOT intuitive, comfortable, reliable NOR quick. This is makes for a very difficult and stressful scramble to press the right button combination as a magnamalo is charging at you. My mouse wheel and side buttons are also somewhat small and difficult to press, so they're even more difficult to use in a fast-paced, tense scenario, even WITHOUT having to press them corded with other buttons.

The solution to this should in theory just be to give us keybind options for "silkbind attack1," "silkbind attack 2," etc... But instead we were given... Left Trigger + X? Right trigger + B? Not only does this force make setting my keybinds needlessly complicated as i try to figure out which controller buttons do what, but it doesn't work consistently in-game. I'll very often have my silkbugs ready, press the button, and it... does a basic attack instead. And some of these "combination keybinds" don't even have the full functionality of just holding the silkbug reticle key to use the desired move, either. Like i can't aim my jumps upward, for example.

This doesn't seem like a problem that should even exist in the first place. Just let us bind our keys to ACTIONS.

There's also the problem of overly complex keybind layouts, due to he fact that many actions can't be mapped to the same key, even when they'd be impossible to conflict with eachother due to those actions being sensitive to different contexts. ("use item" and the wyvernride finisher, for example.) Hopefully config settings will let us fix this issue, but it still shouldn't be a problem. If keybinds conflict, just give us a warning that it could cause issues instead of saying "No, not allowed." And don't allow important keys like the menu button to conflict.

And please let us rebind tab, mouse scroll, etc... There's no reason for that.

Also I think Palamute controls should have their owns separate tab, similar to melee and gunner controls. i have evade on spacebar, but i can't bind "palamute jump" to spacebar because of this. It feels very unnatural to use another button to jump and i don't think i'll ever be able to fully get used to it, ever after 100's of hours.

I made a very angry thread about this but this guy explains it pretty well. Also why in lucifer's smelly crotch pocket are MB4 and 5, which are actually assigned to dedicated video playback controls via their key identifiers including as part of the game's default bindings? IE MB4 and 5 aren't real, they are just keyboard keys people rarely ever use and most keyboards don't include them so they commonly get assigned to MB4 and 5 priorities but still function as pause/play keys. This shouldn't be a problem, not everyone uses a cheap Razor mouse.
Mouse 4 and 5 are real actually. They aren't play and pause keys, unless you changed your button settings they act as forward and back buttons in browsers. Lots of games support them, but most don't have them bound to anything by default, since lots of mice are 3 button.
Yeah I also noticed how clunky the controls felt, especially whilst using the Wirebug.
I was testing out CB and even when holding the middle mouse button and MB5 to "zip away" it wasn't registering and the character guarded instead. Ontop of the Wirebug combos being confusing especially the middle mouse + LMB combo and the upward evade one, is just weird for me. Maybe I just need to play more?
Definitely feels like I should be playing with a controller, guess I'll try that tomorrow.

I just read like the first part of your whole post but i think we can reduce it to:"The keyboard and mouse controls are a complete mess", and i completely agree :slimehappy:

I don't know what shrooms are you on but MB4 and MB5 are part of default windows mouse driver for more than 15 years. Go buy noname driverless mouse with 5 buttons and you will see that windows will normally recognize all 5 buttons. In windows they function as forward and back and in games they appear as MB4 and MB5. PC players commonly use them all the time not only in MMO games to fit half a quick bar like ctrl+MB4/5, alt+MB4/5 etc. but in other game genres.

Nope, wirebug moves not working is a problem for me as well.
IDK if this was an issue on Switch but here's hoping it gets patched.
Yeah, I had to do some heavy, heavy rebinding. Half the starting controls are... fine, I guess, but any time you have Mouse 3 bound to something important, I have to change it - there's just no practical way to use that input on the fly, particularly in conjunction with other keys (for me, at least. I'm sure there's other people out there who have no problem whatsoever).

So I swapped it to Mouse 4, moved whatever was on Mouse 4 to... something else, I don't honestly remember what right now, then had to change a bunch of other controls due to some conflicts (I think related to heavy bowgun ammo swapping?) and then the game got much, much more playable.

That said, I'm still not confident I understand how to do Silkbind attacks.
