but the gathering them is a chore but i know the locations and the paths to save time
You don't *need* to do it, just go kill the monster if you really don't like the system. I've never felt like I had to stop to go fill up.
Then I think the best thing to do would be spend a little time finding routes that have tons of birds on them to make it take less time. Ideally, Capcom alters the system a bit in Sunbreak for players who like to be max'd out for fights. I hope you figure out something that works for you!
Otherwise you will have to deal with the monster at the risk of getting 1-shot.
As a side note, different petalaces buffs you at different rate. The best HP focused petalaces give +10HP per birds so you will need less to reach maximum.
But if you have not been doing this yet, at least you can set the left bumper minimap zoom to look for buff birds by adjusting the filter on the detailed map. Which makes remembering all those birds you would normally overlook because they are above or below you go by faster.
Memorizing a bird route? Sounds like trolling yourself compared to getting a refresher on where every bird on the map is on demand. Which is also handy for stuff like when the best armor spheres showing up as a gold loot bird collection sidequest you might not be obsessing over enough to remember where 12 of them are.
Shame the detailed map can only show one broad category, or one specific resource at a time. Which makes things like wanting to collect mining nodes or mushrooms a case of "Either I only highlight one type, or every kind of gathering object at once."
With a good defense stat plus demondrug and armorskin you should be able to take a hit. Remember you can also get an armor and attack charm from the vendor (they can be upgraded to a higher tier and you can carry the base form as well). Divine blessing or whatever it is called in this game also is a good survivor skill (when maxed).
Personally I only get birds on the way to a hunt and do not go out of my way. The only time it became an issue was those emergency apex events.
However, with the final Petalaces you can further boost your health up to 250, which I think wasn't possible in World (max of 200 with Health Up).
Hate to break it to you but food does effect your max health total. Go out into a hunt without eating, note your max health, head into the tent and then eat dango. You may notice a huge change.
