It kinda depends on what you need from the monster. I'm not sure but capturing might give 1 more than carving if you don't have the ability to 4 carve, which comes from gear or food (don't know) but a more important consideration is exactly what you need.

For example: I need a Nargacuga Medulla. I think it's 3% dropped on capture, and 7% on carving, and carving the tail is 12%. So naturally I want to kill them for the carves despite there possibly being 1 more drop if I capture, simply because of how high the differences in drop rates are.

Sadly... that means I have to fight more Nargacugas for a rare drop. :(

Not necessary. Capturing gives a different set of rewards than killing, which might give more (or less) of some mats. Some mats are exclusive for capturing, and likewise, some mats only drop from killing.

You can see which mats drop from killing and capturing in the Hunter's Notes > Large Monsters

In terms of amout it's about the same, it's the drop rate of specific materials that change depending on how you chose to end the hunt. Some might argue that since capturing is faster you get more rewards for your time but it's not a big deal really.

On top of of the other advice. Bring a 'Gathering palico with you. They pick up and plunder all kinds of stuff. Even the rare monster materials.

it used to in others games but in Rise i think its more about the same, though killing may make it easier for certain parts where capture may make it easier for others
