Is it better to capture or kill and carve?
I understand there's a chance at rare monster parts if you capture, and it can end the battle quicker, but I've seen people argue both sides.

Is there any actual hard numbers to show if you get more rewards from carving or capturing?

I think it gives a slightly higher chance to get rare parts if you captured. Like I captured the seething bazelgeuse and gotten like 3 rare parts from it. Just remember: you cannot capture elder dragons.

The game gives you the drop percentages and you get 3 from carves 4 from captures so just do the math yourself

I believe claws are more plentiful from carves and the others from captures

I mean, you can look at your chances for each monster by going to the 'Large Monsters' page in your 'Hunter Notes' and by swapping to the 'Materials' tab

Some things are easier/only acquired by capturing and some by carving.

It depends on what you need. Some things can only be obtained via killing a monster, some only by capturing. In game will even give you % of items from carving, capturing, part break, target rewards, and so forth.

I always used to hear that you always get a guaranteed 3 carves unless you got a skill or something else to increase. Meanwhile you only get 2-3 rewards from capping. Making killing more attractive if you just want more monster parts in general.

This video works in a bunch of math while also factoring in value of parts for melding to come to a more definitive conclusion. TLDR for vid is that you should kill the vast majority, and only a couple monsters should be killed only if you can get 4 carves. But capturing is still good simply because it's quicker.

There are hard numbers from the hunter notes which give you better chances for certain items depending on how you complete the quest. The rest, yes, you can optimise and so on, especially with capture master or multicarve, but it is still more a personal preference thing.

Taking down a monster after it is weakened enough to be captured does not take that long. I have seen capture attempts which took longer than going for the actual kill.

Capture or carve, depends entirely on if you want the rare-drop plates/orbs/mantles or not. Carving gives three (four on elders, more with the right food buff) more rolls on a table that can give you the rare drops. Capture rolls on a table that doesn't include the rare drop, meaning you finish the hunt slightly faster but only have a single roll for the rare drop on quest rewards.

Personally, the only time I even consider capture is if we're 2-downs deep and just need to get the mission done. Otherwise I always go for the kill, since it doesn't take THAT much longer and anomaly investigations can't be tranq'ed anyway.

the game already makes this decision for you because you are unable to capture in endgame content, so save yourself some time in midgame and cap these beasts as long as it is possible

most of the rare drops comes from part breaks anyway so better focus on this instead of thinking too much about cap vs carve
you will also drown in these rare drops while playing anomaly investigations on higher levels.

What? No, you get 2-3 parts from capture. World was the one with 4.

Some things have higher % change from capture. Like red scale for example may be 2% chance carve 20% capture.

Personally i absolutly hate capturing and think its DogSh!t is has been sh!t since the first MH and never improved. I usually dps them to death, if not then i gotta slowly widdle them down to where i see them limp then wait for them to fly to nest then go to nest lay trap wake them up have them run on trap and THEN capture them. What a sh!tty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ chore, ♥♥♥♥ that always kill the monster.

Capture is so much easier and faster.

There are different drop rates between capture and carve. Might be important for completing an item.
Just follow the quest leader. If it's a low level quest it doesn't really matter, and high level qurio monsters can't be captured.

It literally doesn't matter you can get all drops in just a few hunts plus you can just trade for the rare drops. only thing to do is Just break everything

This. If you're in MP and not the leader, let them decide. Otherwise, check the monster part you're after in the Large Monster list to see which has a better chance. Usually capture is safe but there can be specific parts where you really hurt your chances of you don't carve.

killing is always faster than capping, even if the rewards were equally if you're an efficent hunter than killing is faster in most cases
