Why's everyone saying MH6?
If they go back to numerical naming, next would be MH8
Because Generation is 5th, World is 6th, Rise is 7th game.

Every generation consist of 2 games main and portable, if im not wrong:
Gen 2: MH2 and mhfu
Gen 3: MH3 and mh portable 3rd
Gen 4: MH4 and mhgu
Gen 5: MHW and mhrise

So now we are waiting for gen6.

There's no way MHW and MHR are in the same generation. They are so different they have to be in different generations. MHR is not even using the same engine than previous titles.

Also Pokemon XY is main game and ORAS is remake, so it makes sense they belong to the same gen. Can't compare it with MH

Also the MHR wikipedia page says that it's the 6th installment of the series. IDK how they come up with this number but next game is definitely not MH6

I seen a video of someone trying to break this down. I think the games are just grouped with a main title and a "smaller" title of some sorts.
To add on to what others are mentioning, I doubt we'll ever see a "6" or "7" or an expansion with "Ultimate" in a title ever again.
It's guaranteed going to be similar to 5th gens' naming scheme, which is to say:
First game: Name of Game > Name of Expansion
Second game in 6th gen: Name of Game > Name of Expansion

Personally, I like 5th gens' naming scheme over earlier titles.

The 'generation' system to categorize the releases has been around since the beginning of the MonHun fandom.

Historically, MH games released on a development cycle that looked like: release game with new content -> release a follow up game that is essentially the same base game with data transfer compatibility, plus a ton of new content, areas, monsters, and endgame progression. The same formula is seen today with MH:World unto Iceborne, and MH:Rise unto Sunbreak. The only difference is they are in the modern era where DLC updates are possible instead of having to create a whole new physical game copy.

Games are grouped together because of their "gameplay mechanics, and identity" compared to the games comprising the generation before it. There is a definite difference between the 4th and 5th Generation games and how they handle with their traditional MH environments, limited traversal, and monster rosters, weapon movesets, and mechanics (i.e. Hunter Arts, present subspecies, flagship monsters, Apex/Tempered/Arch-Tempered fights etc.)

People wanting to glorify MH:World basically for graphics and a shoddy attempt at story -- seem to overlook the fact that MH:World is the *exception* to the usual Monster Hunter game experience mechanically and atmospherically by design; it was not necessarily made to reflect the core of how the series usually was up to that point in time. If I am to be brutally honest, I think MH:World had some of the worst balancing in the series especially with MH:W Iceborne, and I have played almost every release since MHF2. Yet, despite this, MH:World simultaneously made leaps and bounds for the series as a whole with its mechanics and did spearhead the direction the series would take from thereon out.

MH:World was a gambit CAPCOM went out on a limb with to innovate in a *ton* of QoL changes, open environments and traversal, and an entire rework of weapon movesets with a plethora of balancing, new skills, and mechanical differences which let them experiment in order to make the game more palatable and streamlined to a global audience vis-a-vis bringing the gameplay into a new level and era for the series. This being said, they took what they liked from their advancements in MH:W and cut what was superfluous to the identity of a Monster Hunter game in their eyes in making MH:Rise.

MH:Rise takes these innovations from MH:World into account for its formula, and returns to the roots of what a monster hunter game more traditionally feels like, whilst preserving the QoL and lessons learned from MH:World. It is very much so a Gen 5 game because it still takes after the predominant design philosophy and changes in the environment flow, movement/traversal, balancing, equipment/skills, movesets, and monster interactions that were innovated upon in MH:World. Sure, it is more restricted because of being also designed for a handheld console but it has the soul of the series AND innovations attributable to the same game generation's formula, only streamlined further.

You talking about having the same monster but stronger? Oh, right, Rise did that.
You talking about one shots? Yeah, good thing Rise doesnt have those
You talking about seiges that, for most of the time, is so unorganized that people finished off the seige before others could even get back? Yeah, screw pubs
Because not everyone is familiar with all the history and weird naming of the franchise. Also nobody really cares besides the hardcore fans that also always argue about semantics. What devs said 20 years ago and what not.

your list is invalid in so many ways, capcom already stated in interview mhrise is main series of the game, after MHW. so basically what we waiting for is MH 7. only elitist gives categories list like that

It literally is the same team that made World. They combined the Main Series and Portable Teams, and then they also have at least one Frontier team members as well.

I think you are right. I just googled MHGU is officially spinoff. So MHR is MH6, what we are waiting for is MH7.
We can't deny the possibility of MHR2, unless capcom doesn't want to earn from NS users.
