The hud is one of the worst I've ever seen.
It reminds me of my mothers malware infested laptop infested with popups. Whoever designed it needs to think about a change in career.

First off, almost the whole screen is taken up by it and the placement of it's elements are poorly thought out. Take the rampage fights for example; when the counter gong is active, do we get a little gong icon in the corner, maybe with depleting level graphic or a pulsing animation? No, slap that ♥♥♥♥ dead centre of the screen in a big black bar right where the action is taking place.

Second, the hud and the game world are at odds with each other. Rises areas are pretty drab and dreary, but the hud elements are stark and bright. They clash with each other because they aren't painted with the same palette. It makes it very difficult to look past the hud and get immersed in the world.

Third, there's the option to disable elements of the hud, but doing so negatively impacts how playable the game is. Lets say you disable the minimap which takes up a quarter of the screen - now you have no way to tell where the monster ran off to. You can open the detail map, but now your trading one immersive element for another. Or how about the monster icons at the top corner? Now you have no way to tell if a monster can be caught. Them limping off doesn't happen on cue and your palicos lie about the monster being weak. About the only things you can safely turn off are the quest objectives and buddy health. Why include a customisation option, but not a scaling one? Or better yet, why not make certain elements contextual.

Lastly, the menus have no quality of life functions. Want to equip some armour with fire resist? There's no sort function, just a long list your have to search through one piece at a time, (which by some baffling reason list all the armour you don't have as well!?) And each piece requires you to tab through the details and effects with no easy way to compare. This is a game where you hunt monsters, craft armour and tweak your stats and they gave no thought whatsoever to two or the three pillars of the experience.

I'm guessing people are going to excuse this stuff by saying it was made for Switch. But that doesn't fly for me. I don't own a Switch, I have a PC and I bought this game on PC. If I wanted to play a switch game, I'd buy a Switch or run an emulator.

the specific things you complain about in the HUD (minimap and monster status) is dead false, look where the monster walks/flies with your eyes, or if it digs, follow it, and the monster status last time I checked still has the blue icon if you turn off the monster status icons

I just watched an Aknosom fly north from the centre of the Ruins, only to end up in the southern fields. And a Khezu fly from outside the southern cave in Islands and end up in the northern cave at the opposite side of the map. They go where they want sometimes.

Kinda sounds like you're talking about MH4U. If you followed a monster's shadow when they flew away, they'd go one direction and end up somewhere completely different lol.

I see u point and i found the UI to be kinda cluttered, its a thing most japanese games have issue with they just are incapable of getting rid of this problem but at least theres an option to turn certain elements of the hud off in the settings, try it out, I removed several of hud parts like hunter party, skill swap icons with the silkbind stuff (this one took a huge space), the action menu bar, the part that also shows which monsters are on the map, it made this ps3 looking game even better to look at so try it out.

Monster Hunter's HUD has always been very colorful (with the exception of World), as most games are on portable systems and need that extra visibility. Just google any of the 3DS games and the HUD style is pretty much the same as in Rise, the same colors and icons.

While it's cool that you can turn various parts of it on and off, I agree there isn't much you can disable without losing QoL. The only thing I turned off is the extra wirebug skill info (second scroll + skill names) added in Sunbreak. It's dead center and eats a good chunk of screen estate.

As a personal anecdote, I've tried getting my friend into Rise , he's never played Monster Hunter before and straight up said the HUD looks like a crappy Korean MMO, it was a huge turn off for him.

The skillswap/wirebung info one is really bad

Agreed. The Hud, UI/UX experience is an offense to humanity. It's almost comical how ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awful it is! It's not like just one thing is bad about it. It's EVERYTHING.

Whoa! someone who actually compares graphical levels to the correct era? I don't believe you exist, there is no way.
Mod it and carry on

You can go into options and turn certain HUD elements on or off if it clutters the screen too much.

some of the stuff was already addressed by modders
which made ui updates
like adding vulnerbility of monsters to quest like monster weakness icon

maybe some of the stuff will find its way into the next iteration
like an option for the palamute to sniff for the monster if you play without minimap
or adding some compass at the top of the screen which highlights the direction to every monster
the beetles from mhw were also heavily criticized from many so it is hard for developers to please everyone

i dont get the thing about colors kicking you out of imersion while i assume you would disable everything if want the full hunter experience, no fancy meters anywhere

I wonder if the health status could be displayed though direct indicators on the avatar
for the people who want to play without hud

There were all these japanese games where your armor got slowly destroyed during the battle or deadspace did it through the healthbar at the back, maybe there are more creative ways to display the status or at least 3 stages full hp, half and critical, but veteran hunter would already know you can't take more than 2 hits against tough monsters anyway.

how do you handle stamina management without this fancy yellow bar, the avatar starts coughing if he is low or heavy sweating

i also still failed to figure out how to save different gunner ammo build and save them with my pouch loadout

Heh. There is also a skill for that. :mhwhappy:

I agree, the UI is god-awful. I can get around it, but it could have been SO much better. JUST a scaling option would already do wonders, honestly.
Garble Feb 21, 2023 @ 6:08pm
I just put the game on minimum graphics with the render resolution all the way down so it really feels like I'm playing on switch.
