Why high rank monsters feels like damage sponge?
Hi, regular Monster Hunter World Insect Glaive player here, I'm new in Rise, and despite the flaws of the game, I'm really enjoying it!

Or it was until high rank, my hunts went from "Wow I killed that Rathian in 7 minutes wtf" to "Now he's doing me some real damage"

So... I would like to ask, why even with Champion weapons the monsters feels like a damage black hole? Is even worse in Multiplayer, maybe is my equipment? or I'm doing something wrong? I want to know

Welcome to Monster Hunter. All of LR and HR are just tutorials meant to ease you into what the game ultimately expects of you. Although admittedly Rise's Village Quests are awful for that because the monsters there have only 1/3rd normal health, as people said.

The instant you hit HR, the training wheels start coming off whether you like it or not. And by the time you finish the story in base game and move on into MR you're expected to be a competent hunter. This means you're expected to start putting together builds focusing on the skills you want that help you fight the way you want to.

If getting hit and taking damage is a problem, consider how you want to try to survive.
  • Do you have a shield that you use frequently? Guard skills
  • Do you rely on i-frames a lot? Evade Window
  • Do you want extra tank for when you get the occasional hit? Recovery Speed + Immunizer + Defense Up
  • Do you like Wirebug moves and want more access to them? Wirebug Whisperer + Wind Mantle (MR only skill)
  • Do you want to deal more damage? Attack Up + Weakness Exploit + Crit skills
  • Do you want your Cat to do more? Bomb Cats = High Stagger, Gatherer Cats = More mats + Random Status; Healer Cats = Heals you

The list goes on. The monsters will only get even tougher in MR so good luck and happy hunting.

Upgrade people, upgrade.
Anyways, when you're in HR, you should upgrade your armor and swap out the ones with skills your weapon utilizes
Oh, and ofc, you weapons as well

This is how MH typically plays when going from LR to HR, and then HR to MR. Monster get stronger and more beefy as you climb to higher ranks.

If you are struggling, then upgrade your gear or swap em out, like Popcorn said.

Didn't want to make a thread about it but on PS5 having issues with damage they deal, doing the rank 6 mission to open Rank 7 and the monster is 1 shotting me, was in armor level 52 gear the rarity 5 set B something then I get a Rathion set to armor 60 but still taking a beating every hit, had little issue up to this point and that's the best armor I can craft/max atm.

Sword n board then Long sword....
What might be the source of your feelings is that in this game, LR monsters in quests from Kamura village (given from Hinoa) have about 1/3rd the health of monsters in quets from the Gathering Hub.

You shouldn't be getting one shot except by big telegraphed attacks pretty much ever. Problem is your defense, or you aren't paying enough attention to your health.

I don't know.. High level anomaly attacks really bring the pain. Add in the fact that most don't collect spiribirds and one shots are quite common.

Eh. Even then, you don't get that many one shots. Yeah, attacks take 80-90%, but that isn't really a one shot. I'm up to 160+, and can count the number of one shots on a hand or two. As long as your armor is entirely upgraded, and you aren't walking into the big attacks, you are usually pretty safe.

LR quests are typically 4-7 min long, HR ones should be around double that, it's normal. You're supposed to start optimizing your builds and just play better in general.

Insect glaive users are a thing?

In HR your gear starts mattering more. Not in the sense that you need higher rarity gear, but moreso you want to start making sure you are getting a good amount of useful skills from your gear. I am not sure what stats IG users prioritize, but things like Attack Boost, Weakness Exploit, and whatever elemental damage type your using (if your even using one) are a good place to start.

Make sure your keeping your weapons upgraded as much as you can. Make sure you are using Armor Spheres on your armor to give you as much defense as possible (you should have plenty to max out some pieces of HR gear by now). You might even want to start looking into bringing Demon Drugs and Armor Drugs in every hunt, or at least the ones you are struggling with.

Also thing are just becoming more spongy. That is how the game scales. The further in you get the more HP things have, so in order to keep up you have to start doing significantly more damage, or just have longer hunts. No shame in using the Join Request feature either.

Well a 7 minute hunt is rather short by MonHun standards, so I think it's just a case of LR being too easy at least in terms of health pools. Remember that it's not about getting the hunt down as fast as possible. Enjoy the hunt.
