Depends. If your build is all out offence, eat full defense plus moxie so you won't die that easily. If you want some comfort, I suggest you to slot in def boost lv 7 or divine blessing lv 3 + stun resist lv 3 + evade extender at least at lv 2.

Defense faces severely diminishing returns so skills like Defense Boost are highly inefficient. With Divine Blessing 3 you can avoid a lot of oneshots, otherwise picking up a few green HP birds on the way to the monster will also help.

If you're using a ranged weapon, because of the way damage calc is done, you'll still get hit like a bus.

The "reduced elemental damage taken" doesn't really mean much as most monster attacks are primarily physical damage even things like fireballs.

Optimal sets have defense that is usually sit between 650-700 so you are not too far off. Like Sylvie said, get some comfort skills until you are comfortable with the monsters then you can slot them out for some offensive skills. Dango plays important role as well, such as 'Dango Defender(Hi), Dango Moxie, Dango Feet/Marksmen' in order. I am assuming you are new to the game, take your time learning monsters moves by soloing them because you get to experience the attacks firsthand and learn what todo when said moves are aimed towards you in pug/lobby runs.

This is my Kinsect-Only build I'd been playing around with. I've yet to be hit by anything that can 1-shot me and if I do get hit either Recall Kinsect, Blood Rite or the combination of Recovery Up+Recovery Speed+Dango Driver food buff top me off again pretty fast if not instantly. The defense is bolstered by Furious, which makes me immune to all but Ice elemental blight. It's an all around comfy build that has the bonus effect of healing any party members frequently since you'd be leaving around or using the green clouds near the monster. It's not a fast build, but it's not slow either with the damage Powder Vortex can put out.

I did replace Good Luck with Power Prolonger, though it's generally a free 4-slot decoration that I'm not sure what else to spend on. Maybe Speed Eating for an absolute emergency? I like the Power Prolonger mainly because it's good for the Earplugs IG get with White+Orange extract.

I'm really looking forward to the potential of the armor skill changes with the next update becausee I might even be able to change some skills I don't use to turn this additionally into a full group healer or perhaps Evasion or even just Earplugs so that the extracts would be redundant.

The Talisman is a Pre-Sunbreak one with 3 Divine Blessing, 1 Evade Extender and a 2-slot decoration.

Eat for wirebug whisperer and collect your birds within 1 minute,

As a ranged user i always have 250 hp and im not one hit no matter what i fight (im mr100+)

Its amazing, i simply dont need anything else as wirebug whisperer anymore, love this skill!

I have yet to have a single point of defense boost and everything that seems to be a for sure one shot or at least close to it (some things that one shot me before at some tiers dont anymore cause better overall armor) is the only threat I'v come across, what does hit me mostly just tickles to the point even a normal potion would be overkill.

And I belive thats cause i dodge the telegraphed attacks where most people just eat the hit when you have enough time to court a woman and get married, have 3 kids, get divorced and still have time to pay the child support before the attacks wind up is done.....

There is nothing which can get you "insta-killed" as long as you properly upgrade according to the game'S progression curve. If you want an actual discussion or even advice, I suggest you elaborate with details like screenshots with your build and examples of quests you are struggling with. Otherwise you are just making fun of yourself with that statement of yours. Though if that is your intention all along, you are not getting clown awards.

i've seen your replies on other posts, it seems like you're the clown here, all you do is type paragraphs that doesn't make any sense and promote your useless guides

To an extent, yes. Unless you build for all out defense/mitigation, then monsters at late MR will hit like a truck. If you're a ranged weapon user, the truck is instead a nuke.

When defense matters is that prior example and if you're not upgrading your gear through the progression. Which at late MR, 600+ defense is average. An easy way to help with "insta-kills" without gimping your build is to eat for Dango Defender(Hi) as the first/second dango in my experience.
600 defense is on the lower end for MR, so is it like around 620, or around 680 level of defense? The difference between those is quite significant actually (at least based on my experience). If you think you take too much damage then slot in some Defense Boost until you feel like you have enough. Oh yeah and make sure you've fully upgraded your armor of course.
