Your decision will largely depend on if you're a weeb or not tbh.
They look equally good and bad.
They're pretty much divided into function and form, with the female sets being all about form and very little function. Yeah yeah it's a fantasy game with monsters yadda yadda, whatever. Male sets are usually both function and form, so yeah it's a given.
Although considering Rise totally shát on males by not including beards beyond something you draw on your face with face paint, I'm not so sure. I guess it's even more reason to cover up my hunters face, anyway - shame the game removes my helmet and exposes me to his weak, womanly chin without any facial hair on it every time I eat dango, lol.
Personally I say male armor is the safest, because most sets are committed to their design.
