Do I "bank" the extra experience before reaching HR 8?
I played through the game when it first released on switch when the game was still missing some content and the level cap was at 7 I believe. I usually play any and all optional quests before moving on to the next assigned quests. This caused all the potential experience to go to waste, since everybody started at HR 8 with the content update and no experience was "banked" like in MHW.

Did this change when first playing through the game or will i have to concentrate on only doing the key quests and rushing towards endgame to make optional quests worthwhile for the experience rewards?

Old thread, still valid answer. I kept the link since the question appears from time to time again.

No, even though the game is content complete you still don't get any overflow HR whenever it's capped. Rush your keys.

Don't worry about HR that much anyway, all you need to play everything is HR8. To HOST everything you need HR100, though.

I don't know what game plumber is playing, but that's completely inaccurate. HR is definitely banked.

I recently unlocked HR 40, when I was HR 30 (The previous cap for me) and immediately rose to HR40 since I spent a lot of time messing around and grinding. This also happened exactly the same previously when I was HR20 and unlocked HR30, immediately rising to the new cap.

Correct.

I can confirm as well. Hr is definitely banked.
Plumber May 29, 2022 @ 4:37pm
my HR wasn't banked when uncapping from HR7, so it's possible we're all correct and HR pre-Narwa isn't banked but everything 8+ is

Hunter rank points before HR unlock? No
After HR8? Yes
Starfisher May 29, 2022 @ 10:17pm
No, HR isn't banked till you reach HR 8, the levels unlocked status. Yes, it is banked after that, you can suddenly jump for example from 20 to 30. But you will not jump from 7 to 20 when your HR becomes unlocked.

Source: I have done all available quests (apart from some harder events) before HR unlock. Many of them I did multiple times (for practice or mats). Still, when my HR unlocked, I stayed HR 8.

Just go by the rule of thumb in doubt: any upper limit you encounter < = HR 20 will cut the HR points until you unlock the next HR with doing the next urgent quest.

On a side note: due to how fast you accumulate HR points later on, you lose out on circa 12 HR ranks if you decide to do all other side quests first before moving on. That is because the HR points you can get from the quests on those ranks are really that low. Probably even less than 12. It really only matters when you start "farming" for materials at a capped HR. But 12 HR ranks equals circa 4-6 endgame Rampage quests. Or: one hour of playtime to catch up on the HR you missing out.

Considering that and the fact that Sunbreak is around the corner, and you will eventually cap put HR at 999 if you keep playing, this discussion is probably equally meaningful like discussing whether a cup is half full or half empty while free refill is available.

How will you feel when you reach the final cap and it does not matter anymore? Will you stop playing because you reached HR999 and all your HR experience points beyond that get wasted?

Thanks for all the input on this.
I was actually looking for an old thread but didn't have much luck finding some conclusive answer at first.

It essentially boils down to beating the core game first before making significant progress towards levelling up. But I'm glad to hear that it doesn't even make much of a difference!

I can relate easily to your inquiry, since I am too, a person who likes to finish everything available, before progressing forward.

On the Nintendo Switch there was a two weeks gap, if I recall it right, before HR20 cap got removed. So I played two weeks with "experience wasted". But then again: after HR100 you do not unlock anything, and I have also seen plenty of players who are no better than HR4 players, despite they had HR100+ on their guild card.

The only thing where the HR matters to me is getting the personal achievement of HR999. But best is not to aim for that, instead focus on enjoying yourself playing. Otherwise I would be doing Rampage over and over again since PC release and still have not reached that but spoiled my fun.

Your HR will accumulated when you got permission to pass HR10 but still need to reach certain threshold to unlock new quest .

half true, you don't do until the first uncap but then you do, we pulled a friend from 20 to 160 within those 4 urgents since he truly banked it. They kinda ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up honestly, MH games always banked the HR, it just doesn't work on the first one here.

yeah, I was extremely surprised as well
