Monster Hunter Rise is a mainline game
I have no idea why people keep saying it isn't. It has it's own plotline, gameplay mechanics, and unique monsters. Monster Hunter Tri and 4 are also mainline games and was released on the 3DS so the "it's made for portable" argument doesn't really stand. I guess because it's a port of the Switch console that somehow makes it a lesser game? As far as I can tell, this game has just as much to offer as World, if not more.

The game's producer, Ryozo Tsujimoto (who is also a senior producer on World), said that with both World and Rise, they wanted to move away from the use of traditional numbering for the main titles in the Monster Hunter series and instead name them based on a central concept that the game was built around; "Rise" was chosen reflect the verticality of the game's levels and gameplay elements.

For all intents and purposes, this is Monster Hunter 6.

World and Rise are both fifth gen monster hunter games. Much like 4 and Generations were fourth gen, and Tri and Portable 3rd were third gen, ect. This is not hard to understand. Even in the Capcom leaks they were internally designated as 5 and portable 5. Some people just have weird persecution complex about designations. Stop making games part of your personality. Capcom nor the teams do not consider any of the games lesser than any of the others, and the two teams always take and build on ideas from each other.

The next game after Sunbreak will be internally the sixth generation of MH

Rise is a follow-up to Tri.

It uses the same maps, remnants of monsters from Tri can be found all over the map (like Jhen Mohran with the dragonator stuck in his head...next to a broken dragonship), and some of the items from Tri have found it's way into Rise (like Loc Lac Ore among a few others).

It's definitely not a spinoff.
Technically, Rise is more like a recycling of Portable 3rd.
As in rural Japanese village full of cherry blossoms, big beastie flagship, floaty storm-dragon final boss... and yes, literal 3D, open-map remakes of the Portable 3rd maps.

Makes me wonder why we haven't got Amatsu back.

I just call them “monster hunter games”. The need to distinguish “mainline” and “portable” games is for people who can’t fathom the idea that, just because one game was developed for weaker hardware doesn’t mean it can’t have just as much content as the other
they are different dev teams. the portable team does the weird ♥♥♥♥ and the mainline games do the safe ♥♥♥♥.

World felt more like a spinoff/reboot compared to Rise.
i don't see how it's like tri. and tri was a mainliine console game for wii.

From what I got from the internet players only consider titles made by the console team to be mainline titles.

I first thought that every game that introduces a new generation is a mainline title, but apparently it's not like that.

Well...of course it's a mainline game. Monster Hunter Stories is an example of a spinoff. Anyone saying it's not a mainline game is just...well...wrong. Let them be wrong if they want. Their lack of understanding won't change facts.

Just cause it's portable doesn't make it not part of the mainline series, just like SMTV isn't any less of an SMT or a mainline game simply because it's on Switch.

It because it's all these MH virgins that started with world crawling out from there holes crying boohoo cause it looks like a portable game (Which i don't find it does lol go play freedom unite and come back and say that). Personally i'm enjoying the game alot and i'm loving the new monsters, be nice to see some conversation about the damn game in the forums.

its monster hunter just go out and kill ♥♥♥♥ who cares if its part of a main series or not just murder and have fun
Dondu Jan 16, 2022 @ 5:16am
mh4 > mh4u > mhworld = main series, inheret original moves
mhg /mhx(jpn) > mhrise = newgen something - a bit faster than traditional moves (hunter style aka switch skill)

I bought all games, including japanese versions

Wasn't MH6 also mentioned for 2023 in the big Capcom leak? So Rise can't be MH6.

Rise in no shape or form is MH6. It's a 5th generation game just like Generations was a continuation of 4th generation. The next game after this will be 6th generation named MH6 in the leaks however the official title will not be called MH6 because they don't do numbering anymore. Rise is also still a main line game.

MHW was MH5 in everything but name and Rise is MH Portable 5th or Freedom 5th in everything but name.

As someone who is new to MH, it really makes no difference. Don't really care if next comes MH6 or 7 or whatever, I just want the next title.
