Dog allows for fast transport and better status application (via parasol which hits many times). Cat allows for more support tools, especially Gathering cats (which are flat out the best overall), giving you more loot, free traps, healing and so on. They both have their uses.

Edit: Put Summeown Endemic life on one of the cats for free wirebug.
If you fight mostly Elder Dragons, put Shock Tripper on both.

Cats because the dog does two things, it gets you around faster and it attacks, but wirebugs can go just as fast if not faster if you get subcamps, my cat has a paralysis weapon and is assist and she just outperforms my dog, no contest.

Gather cat always for me although solo I'm bringing one dog so that I can work towards that guild card award of riding one for like 10 hours total.

Dog because sharpening on the move is very convenient. You can also sharpen in fight which I find very helpful in early ranks.

Cat. Materials are to good not to be getting. Especially early on where money is scarce. Dogs, in most cases, aren't more then a couple seconds faster anyways.
