HELP: I suck ass at capturing monsters and want to get better
I just unlocked the level 2 quests and I still have no idea how to capture monsters. I did the tutorial but still am confused. I suck at the game but want to get better. Can anyone give me a basic rundown on how to capture and what items to use? Thanks to anyone who can help and I apologize for my ignorance, this is my first MH game and its a lot to learn

Hm... the tutorial is actually pretty good in this one for that matter...

1. You need to weaken the monster
You have several indicators to take note of the status when a monster is capturable.

One of them is the blue icon you can see next to the monster's symbol on your GUI
https://ibb.co/SsbgVhQ

If you have a Palico with you, they will tell you that a tad earlier via chat message.

In multiplayer you can set an auto-shout to make it visible via chat.

When the monster limbs away is a clear gameplay indicator. When that happens you can either try to capture it right away like most due. But the traditional way is to wait for the monster to return to its safe zone. It will go napping right away to recover some HP.

2. Shock traps > Pitfall traps
Shock traps are much faster to set than Pitfall traps. Hence the favourism for speed and convenience to craft them on the go since you can find on every map Thunderbugs. You just need to bring trap tools along.

3. The trapping
You can use tranquiliser bombs first on the monster. That is what I would recommend to beginners. One monster needs to be hit by the area of effect in very close quarters twice by two bombs. After that the monster becomes capturable for a short while - they fall asleep when they fall into a trap.

Most players do it the other way around for speed - but again: I recommend to beginners the most traditional approach and then change over time when they actually get used to it and developes a feeling what they can do or not.

Veterans make fun of monsters by setting traps early on their way home - because they can tell when it is the last battle for the monster. That is fun stuff. Do it later after you learned the ropes.

Basically: let the monster limb to safety and sleep. Use tranquiliser bombs on them which you can buy later from the market after unlocking. Set the trap right below them, or make sure you can lure the monster to them.

When the sleep it is really just: give them a hug with two tranqs and leave a trap at spot - done.

Once you progressed enough you will not have to worry about buyables for traps and tranqs. Tranqs are cheap, trap tools are cheap, you only need to let the submarine farm gather thunderbugs and/or crafting materials for nets. Rondine often has traps and those for trades too for Kamura points. They are pricey that way, but you hardly ever run out of anything you need to trap monsters.

Ask if anything is unclear or you have issues with the execution of letting the monster limb to safety and napping and trapping.

Up the top right where the symbols for the monsters are, there will be a little blue monster head that starts flashing, indicating that it is ready to be captured. If your cat is with you it may also tell you that something is ready before the little blue head starts flashing
Wait until your palicos says its hurt or ready to be captured OR checker the top right corner for the monster icon or the minimap. When theres a blueish monster skull it means its ready to be captured.

Set up a trap under him, then spam 2 tranq bombs (or ammo if using bow gun) and he will be captured. Im sure there videos on youtube

You will need either a shock trap, or a pitfall trap. Some enemies are immune to shock traps while in a certain state, thing zinogre while it is coated in lightning or rajang while it is yellow (please note that im not sure if it is all yellow or just yellow with red arms), I'm not sure if anything catchable is immune to pitfall traps
beat up the monster until it limps away / goes to it's nest to sleep. a blue symbol will appear beneath it's icon in the top right.
feed the monster 2 tranq bombs. hold aim / wirebug button and you can throw them which is slightly faster and also ranged.
then trap them. shock trap is faster to put down than pitfall trap, but up to you which you use, and some monsters are more resistant to either trap
if you tranq them, but take too long to trap them, you might need to give them an extra tranq. it's a pretty big window though
shock traps require thunder bugs to craft, pitfalls require spider webs / nets. you can buy trap tools from the shop, and materials from the trader if you need them. i don't remember about the tranquillisers but you can check this stuff in your crafting list, and shop/trade whatever else you need
in actual capture quests, the item box comes supplied with trap stuff you can use.

always carry 1 shock 1 pitfall trap + full 8 tranq bombs. rest is easy. make the blue icon appear (weakened status) then place trap and wait behind it. after monster falls to trap, then get close to its head and drop 2 tranq bombs. done. thats all.

Also in rise the only real reasons to need to catch something are if its a mission requirement, or you've carter twice and dont want to risk it, or just to save a little time. It doesnt give more materials to catch unlike on world.

You can also regularly buy the traps from the argosy if you dont want to have to worry about making them

Or if you want to get a drop that is way more likely to happen from a capture. Also, there are some requests later in the game that need you to capture specific ones.

I didnt know that some parts had higher drop rates for capture, so i guess this too

Recommend looking into the Hunter's notes > Large Monsters > Dropped Materials. They actually gave us an in game wiki this time around. Look it up, it will save you a lot of time later when you try to farm for sets and weapons.

Unfortunately it only shows the material and drop rate once you've actually looted it once. Good luck figuring out the drop rate on some random thing like Mizutsune Scales before looting any. Not that it's particularly important though, generally just killing the monster enough times has always been the strategy

Nargacuga and Rajang (when not enraged).

It always shows the drop rates. What it doesn't do is name the material, unless you've already collected it once. You can usually deduce which of the ??? materials is the one you want.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Probably someone else said it.

Beat the monster until a blue icon appears under its icon on top right
Equip your trap (both traps work, i use shock trap)
When he's in the trap throw 2 tranq bombs in his face, shove them right in there.
If it's not an elder dragon you'd capture it.

Still helpful. It often helps underlining and with translation issues.

I know it works like this, but it's not a big problem at all. You fight the monster a couple of times and that list will fill out. And it's also really easy to tell which drops are the rare ones, like gems or plates, without having the name on the list, simply by the very low odds.
