MONSTER HUNTER RISE

MONSTER HUNTER RISE

Not a good game for first timers.
So I was on my switch, wondering what the prices were for the monster hunter games and found that monster hunter rise had a demo (this is before the game was released) and decided to try it cause i've been wanting to play and seeing a demo will give me a chance to actually try it and not lose money if I hate it. Turns out to be a good thing because holy crap is it bad.

Gameplay: awful and confusing. So many mechanics that turn out to prove either not work as intended or completely useless! Im doing the tutorial so I can better understand the game and what i'm doing. So far so good, it's average. I'm new so it takes time which is what to expect when you're new and doing the tutorial, learning from mistakes is the whole point. But one of the issues I have is it doesn't repeat the instructions and you have to go by memory. One of the most irritating parts was learning to mount monsters. The game explains you either use your silk worm stretchy thing (I forget it's name. its the attack on titan swing ability) to entangle it and mount it or use a silk spider thing to entangle it. Apparently the game wants you to use the spider but it doesn't make it that obvious. If it teaches you both methods to mount it should allow you to try either but no matter what I did I couldn't mount the damn monster! I spent what might of been thirty minutes trying to entangle this monster, stretching my string at it only for nothing to happen. Meanwhile this monster bear thing keeps charging me, knocking my sorry ass all over the arena. I do find it amusing if you run the opposite direction of the monster it has a running away in fear animation which I do love and really works with the fact I truly was running for my life. After being literally thrown all over the arena and so many failed attempts I figured I must be missing something and paused to look for a help menu. Next thing I know I still hear my ass being beaten. The game CONTINUES TO PLAY WHEN PAUSED!! I tried climbing the two towers in the arena and tried to look for a help menu, the monster breaks it down and continues to beat the living hell out of me. Despite all that there wasn't a help menu nor did it have a reminder of the controls. Once you see that text instructing you what to do you better memorize it cause when it's gone it's gone, you're on your own kid. So I continued to run all around the arena, wasting my demo's playtime getting knocked down again and again and again and again. Eventually I settled on using the spider which WORKS in ONE. FRICKING. GO. So that tells me that the game prefered me to use the spider the entire time with no instruction to do so. So I wasted so much time getting beaten up not knowing what I should of been doing from the start which only made me more frustrated and didn't help me get into the game. So after that everything went smoothly and I was able to do a real fight. I went for the mizutsune, so far so good, the monster takes off before I can even see it and is underground. The map did a terrible job showing me where it was going. Eventually going from the lake to the waterfall (from a underground cave I guess?) took me a while to find the path up there and the monster moved on. I finally got it in a position to actually FIGHT it aaaaaand this is when things go south

Controls/combat: terrible, just terrible. Absolutely awful. What kind of fighting game doesnt allow you to you know.....fight? I tried to hit the mizutsune, sure I was able to land a few hits but I kept stepping past it. I had to keep positioning myself so I can be able to land hits on it but I continue to slip around the thing and would take damage every time. Trying to hit the monster was more harmful to me than it was for the monster cause I would always have my back to it and take a hit. The fight dragged on and on and on as if the monster was invincible. After thirty minutes of running in a circle after this thing and getting my ass kicked, using potions and accidentally using potions cause they are in a very sensitive spot on my controller. I think I kept trying to dodge or swing but kept on hitting the potion button which didnt help. But then the monster was breathing heavy, it was obviously low on health which excited me. My first kill! Finally I would slay my first monster aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I do zero damage....I was wondering why I can no longer hurt then the game decides to now tell me that I would have to do whatever it called it which in a nutshell is sharpening my sword.....seriously? You're telling me through combat my weapon becomes blunt and I have to stop in the middle of a hunt, with a giant monster rampaging around me I have to kneel down, get a stone and sharpen my blade? Doing this left me wide open and the monster hit me and killed me. After that disastrous hunt the demo ends. No second changes. You tried, you suck, you're done. I was left frustrated and angry. I dont get a second chance? I endured all this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ for a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ tutorial, endure one of the worse combat mechanics ive ever seen in a game and endure the games BS just for it to quit on me? To die because my weapon got too blunt? It was just a demo and instead of getting me interested it did the opposite, it just pushed me away. If this is all the monster hunter games are going to be im not gonna spend a single PENNY on this. All my excitement was gone in under five minutes and for the rest of the demo was just a game of endurance, patience and tolerance. By the end I was so angry and annoyed. Despite hearing and being told how great the franchise is and how fun it looked I was left disappointed and yet relieved. I'm glad I didn't buy the game or anything or it would of been a waste. Would of been just like Overwatch, someone got it for me,was hyped only to find out how much ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that game was (i'm talking about monster hunter not overwatch, im not giving my review on that. That deserves it's own rant) so good thing me or someone else got this game cause it was just one big disappointment after another with broken controls and one of the worse tutorials I have ever seen, maybe even the worst. Frustrating combat, irritating gameplay and an annoying tutorial. This was an awful way to introduce someone to the monster hunter games cause after this experience I dont think I want to try another.

Looks fun but is a disappointment in the end.

I would suggest to watch some videos of people who know the game mechanics. Rurikhan, one who does much content for MH games, even speaks about your mentioned issues with the game.
He speaks in his Monster Hunter Rise video in the combat section (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmQR-RgBKSE&t=297s ) to great length about perceived "clunkyness" vs "fluidity" of the game mechanics, movesets, and the animation-weight.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZFJEsD4aE8 (Arekkz) is another nice source of game content and the mechanics in motion; with way more game-mechanics discussed than shown in the demo.

In addition I have to say that the Demo has been quite enjoyable as someone who played much Monster Hunter before. It has been a bit of a challenge due to the totally bonkers gear-choices they have done for you there, which is definitively something they should mention at some point.

Weapons have a completely different feeling if you invest a bit in various skills (which is not possible in the demo).
Some examples are:
CB, SA: rapid morph
GL: Evade extender
LS: Quick Sheath, Punishing Draw
SnS: Slugger (not different, but sometimes more fun and satisfaction if you make your shield reliably hit the monsters head)

Next, the demo throws you onto a map with many monsters you don't see in the first ranks of village quests (Mitzutsune is a threat level 6 monster and Magnamalo is threat level 7. The latter is firstly seen in an Urgent Quest, to unlock 5-Star village quests).

Finally in the demo you have no control over the preparation of your hunt, which is as important as the hunt itself. You have to decide which and how much potions (and other helpful items) you take with you,

Honestly I can relate with your frustration - I had pretty mixed feelings back in 2010 on Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii as well, which has been my first MH-Game. After a bit of a struggle the franchise clicked with me and so I am still here, enjoying hunting monsters in monster hunter :D

Let me get this straight: you downloaded the demo, of which the tutorials only cover the new gameplay aspects to Rise and explain literally nothing else about the controls that are native to the series, AND gives you some of the worst equipment imaginable so you don’t even get a proper feel for most of the weapons, and are now judging the entire game based on what is effectively just a “hey veteran players already planning to get the game, here’s a teaser to tide you over until the full game comes out!” thing?

Not sure if bait or just dumb…

Well the fact a demo is supposed to give you a look at the game, to decide if its worth getting or not thats not really a good excuse for it. You act like the demo's purpose is anything but. I dont care if its missing aspects. Demo's are supposed to get you hooked not the opposite. Im aware demo's dont provide EVERYTHING but if the demo fails at it's job it's not gonna convince someone to buy the full game. It's a free chance to experience it but it made me change my mind instead of get me more hyped to play the full game.

If a demo pushes people away and instead of attracting them then you got a problem. That demo was if it was not hiding anything and was purposely trying to say "hey this game is trash!"

Get what I mean? I was repelled and because of this demo I decided not to look into any other monster hunter games cause if this is the experience I want nothing to do with it. If the demo alone was a pain in the ass i'd hate to see what the full game is like

It's a demo, it's not a full tutorial, MHR is perfectly fine for people new to the series to get into.

My niece has been getting into the same games I play, Monster Hunter being one of them.

She's had no issues and wants to try World once she's done with Rise. Game is fine for beginners, Rise prob the best for beginners since easier in many regards while still offering a challenge to veterans.

Yeah but a demo is supposed to be a way for you to see if you'll like it. If they give more than that then it'll just be a free game. Demo's are for you to experience it and see if you like it. A taste, a sample. But if that sample is sour and instead of getting people into your product and instead pushes them away then you got a problem.

I tried it and it wasn't fun. I dreaded every moment. I didnt want to experience the full game cause if this is how the game functions with this broken combat and need to sharpen your weapon in the middle of a fight then I want nothing to do with the franchise.

The demo is supposed to show you a bit of what to expect. What you see is what you get and from the sample I tasted i'm not liking it. It made me change my mind about getting any monster hunter games. They seem to be more stressful than entertaining and not worth the money

tldr: demo is bad for newcomers, not the game
the game is as welcoming as ever

Well a demo is supposed to give you a taste of what's to come. From what I got out of the demo is stress and if this is what the game is gonna be like im not gonna waste good money on a game that I wont touch. Looks fun but the experience was maddening. When the demo ended normally you'd be sad and craving more but all I felt was dread and frustration and decided not to get the game.

What kind of fighting game has a broken mechanic that has you literally slip past your target? I kept going around the monster and taking a hit every time. It did more damage to me than I did to the monster

But that's the thing, the demo is supposed to welcome you, a taste. A sample. It draws people in. All it did was the opposite and im not interested in buying the game anymore

Demos are not tutorials, they’re demonstrations

Monster Hunter is a complicated series that requires entire sections to be devoted to explaining how to play it, so much so that including all of that in the demo would take up the entire demo and leave no room to showcase the actual game

If you aren’t willing to sit through the paces to actually learn the game you’re perfectly entitled to that, there are plenty of games out there were you can just turn your brain off and unga bunga all you like, I hear God of War just launched its PC port too. But you’re making yourself look like a right moron saying the entire game is garbage based off the demo alone
