There is no "best place". Look in your hunter notes for which monster has the highest % chance - if there's even any difference - and you'll know what to do.

Keep going for Captures.
And bring a Gatherer Palico that has Plunder learned (its their final skill)
They have gotten me so many gems/plates that I have come to the conclusion that there is 0 reason to take anything **BUT** a Gatherer Palico (or two if you are playing solo)?
I kid you not I will often end a hunt and those guys will have gotten me 1-2 plates or Gems. They are the MVP's of loot.

Most of the gems of that nature that I get are from dropped materials tbh.

Also true. Hell I got a Rathian plate today from a random shiny that I just happened to walk by (probably a turf war that I wasnt there for).

For what I understand the way this works is for example capturing a Barroth gives you 5% chance to drop one. but breaking his head and cutting his tail gives you 3% chance each per carve, meaning 6% chance / carve.
In rise it is very rarely worth it to capture something.
go for rampages they work also

I like the four horns quest, the Double Diablos. It's not for everyone, but I actually think my favourite new world monster is Diablos, because they're quite fun now as well as a good source for generic Dragon gems

Their parts sell for a decent money, too

Sounds good to me. I actually always have the impression, the more fun you have with the game, the more the game gives you back.

Like ~ when you play with joy you just have more luck too!

As a longsword main I also find Diabolos more enjoying in Rise than World. Probably due to how they changed monster AI in Rise to use less stalling (ground digging/flying/charging to the horizon) moves.

event quests usually tend to have higher chances for rare items

quests with multiple of whatever monster you're farming for highest efficiency ofc (if it exists). quests with 3+ target monsters have less health

Also, breaking parts of non-target monsters can give you rewards even if you don't defeat them, which is something you can do on the side in any quest, depending on how desperate you are. my buddy got a valstalk gem once on complete accident when he was farming for a different monster's gem. it was pretty funny, highly recommend

Also also, remember to slam your monster into a different monster and then beat them up with said monster for lots of extra shinies

otherwise as others have no doubt said, carve tail and cap for best chances. maybe use the luck skill too.
