85-95% CPU usage and 95C+ heat on a 9750h (not related to most recent update) [fixed, sort of]
specs: i7 9750h | 2070MaxQ | 16GB (G7 15 7590)

Since I started playing (a few weeks ago, before the recent update which changed performance) my CPU has been seeing extremely high utilisation from MHR. I've changed out the thermal paste and undervolted my CPU (-125 mV on core and cache, -65 on iGPU), but I'm still having problems with super high heat and use.

The CPU isn't throttling enough to be the cause of high usage on its own given that it still seems to hit a boost clock of 3.5GHz+ while in heavy usage areas, and disabling turbo boost only brings the temps down to about 80-85 while dropping my FPS by about 40%.

Are there any particular settings that are super CPU bound, or does this game just love to sip CPU juice constantly regardless of settings?

Drivers updated etc. Any other suggestions?

Hmm, my CPU is 15-25% and 100% GPU. I'd rather have it your way if I could. 95 sounds like a cooling contact problem though. Maybe make sure your heat-sink screws are tight enough(without over-tightening, obviously) as they sometime loosen over time though since you changed the paste it would be weird that's the case.

10th gen i5 and 1070 GTX.

I actually replaced the thermal paste today, the screws are definitely as tight as they should be. The screws on the heatsync for this laptop don't really provide a lot of room for guessing, because they go between requiring no force to turn with a proper screwdriver bit, and having no more room to turn with no room in between.

Yeah I just re-read and saw that. I've never had a laptop so aren't sure if those temps are reasonable but for a PC anything near 100 is way too hot; most PCs will shut-down at 100 for safety reasons. I can't really help beyond that, it's weird that it's 'cpu-bound' for you but I see the opposite. Make sure it's not using an on-board vidcard or try changing power options?

Definitely running off the right GPU, because it was previously running on the wrong one and I was getting 30-40fps haha. That's all fixed now

I'll keep playing around with my undervolting and maybe try messing with my boost clock settings too, see if I can get anything to a more reasonable temp.

there are plenty of settings that affect CPU a lot. when you're looking at the settings it should tell you how impactful they are (like low / medium / high). I have a pretty old CPU and it's not getting maxed out with my settings designed to avoid CPU load, so you should probably have more issues with the GPU in this game

mhm have you checked how your cpu temps behave in other games? cuz i have an i7-8750H and even on idle tht thing never goes below 50°C. i think thats just the sacrifice for having relativly high-power cpu in a laptop

Seems to be about the same in MH World, though with less FPS obviously.

It does have that, but it doesn't specify whether the settings are heavy on the GPU or the CPU.

Lower the game graphic, turn on V sync, open the laptop case so the air flow in easy.

The game IS very CPU-bound, same as World... That said, are you using an AIO cooler? Heat sinks these days just don't cut it. I doubt any settings you can do would help as much as a better cooling solution. You can get a decent one for quite cheap.

No, I'm using a laptop, the model number is provided at the very top of the post and the CPU I listed is a mobile CPU.

Also fwiw, there's a decent amount of air coolers that perform equally to most AIOs when it comes to desktop cooling.

My bad for not reading properly. But my other comments stand.
One thing that might help: CPU usage spikes tremendously with framerate. If you cap the max fps to 60, you can see big gains (larger than reducing graphics settings). And with the way RE engine works this might make the game easier...

If your image scaling is on 150% then turn it down to 100%.
I had the same issue after the recent patch my laptop with GTX 1050ti was running smoking hot like 85°C on GPU and CPU with reduced fps, it was dropping to near 45 fps.
Now its back to stable 60frames with reduced temp.

It's at 100%, and as I said in the title it's unrelated to the recent update as it's been doing this since I got the game a few weeks ago.

It's worth adding that I did try out 150% and it didn't seem to make any difference in heat and only about a 2fps difference, I just couldn't tell the difference between the two.

I remember seeing something like that before. But you wrote you updated the drivers already. The last time I remember it was a mainboard issue which got unmasked by the game. As long as yours is fine, its a guess into the blue.

to lower overall usage try
cap your fps to 60 since anything above in this type of game serves absolutely no purpose other then raise temps by more then 80% while not only giving no benefit but most of the time introducing stuttering and mem leakage
or
raise your virtual memory/pagefile over 8gig
or
disable dynamic shadows and foliage sway ingame settings
also
look how much cpu % win defender is using while playing
and if number is over 5% consider disabling realtime protection when playing which was a massive issue whene iceborne launched
was making win defender use over 35% of my 16threads.. on its own
until a mod patched it or if realtime was disabled
due to.. low and Behold.. Denuvo
which once again plagued another victim
also in nvpanel
force physx to run on the gpu, disable sharpening
and since you are using a laptop avoid using Maximum power option
also recent win updates might have turned on scheduling
to disable it
go in windows settings>system>display>
look at bottom of page for "graphic settings"
and if hardware accelerated gpu scheduling is on turn it off
