Greatsword suggestions for breaking Rath backs.
Pitfall traps are rather expensive, and couldn't find any videos off the bat. Tried attacking their backs during flight, but it's on their whims, and doesn't much apply to rathalos, waiting for them to be knocked down has limited chances per encounter, and aerial strikes are rather precise. Is there a consistent way to break backs from ground combat? Or a spot I can aim at that counts as damage to the back?

If you need back parts It'd be easier to just use a glaive. It can be done with a gs but you've already covered why it can be a pain

Pitfall traps are cheap if you just go for a 5 minutes gathering trip at Shrine Ruins

Flash them when they fly? Its a free stun so you get unlimited access to their backs after right?

Unless you don't want to pay for flashbombs either, in which case... i dunno... Get a Sleep weapon Palamute/Palico and TCS the back after it triggers?

I did a few testing with village Rathalos and it appears to be harder than I thought. The damage kept getting absorbed by wings/head.

However there isn't any unique drops that specifically only dropped by breaking back, the only semi-rare material is rathalos' spine which can also be dropped by cutting tail.

Flashbombs are not as efficient as they used to be in older games, you can maybe get a level one or two draw slash on the back with focus, but the monster will be up before you can get much else. That's why I didn't mention them.

Right now my best approach is to spam pitfall traps, though that's involved a lot of farcastering back to base to refuel.

Sadly my Glaive experience is not even at Low Rank mastery (Haven't touched the Glaive outside of 4U, and it wasn't past 2 star), while my Greatsword competancy is at Master/G rank being my long-time main. So That'd be several dozen hours of training trying to work up competancy with that weapon.

Oh, I have many, but I should correct, it's expensive in terms of time. As it usually needs 3-4 traps to get a break even with focus. Which costs me both traps and farcasters.

You can bring the material with you into the fight, set the 'craft' option in your shortcut and craft it mid-fight

Yes I am aware of that, but I need more than I can bring. Especially since they are often too tall to break the wings, which often means 5-7 , which means at least 1-2 trips back to beck to get the traps needed to get a full break.

Wyvern riding is very useful for breaking almost every monster's back.

Its well worth it to learn. Should only take 30 minutes to an hour to get to a workable stage to kill rathalos/rathian and then its just on the job experience just for the sake of breaking backs
