Is greatsword any good?
I feel like I've fully learned hammer, gunlance, sword and shield and longsword (though im bad at counters), wanting to pickup another weapon. Interested in greatsword but as fun as gunlance was I dont want to pickup a weapon with terrible damage as that.

So, greatsword worth it?

GS is all about big single hit damage, so you won't have to worry about seeing terrible damage unless you miss all your swings.

The GS works great, but requires a lot of patience and monster knowledge. I've used GS up to G rank with great success in many of the games, it does excellent damage, and can be quite consistent once you get used to it. It also does well at breaking parts and cutting tails.
does it do any stun

As a hammerbro this is the real question.

Yeah, it's great. Best melee weapon IMO and the second best melee weapon in speedruns (LS is first of course), so yeah, the damage is great. I would recommend using the Rage Slash Switch Skill when you get it. Check out a video on Youtube for the basics. Focus is a nice skill to have. I prefer 2 levels, and then just the usual damage skills.

It's gonna feel slow and clunky at first but once you get the hang of it feels great and the new Switch Skills give you lots of mobility.

The shoulder tackle does stun damage. If you equip one of your buddies with a blunt weapon you'll get stuns with the tackle too. Don't use the Guard Tackle switch skill. Just use the regular one. Also, use Adamant Charged Slash and not Hunting Edge (it's trash).

Get punishing draw as a skill as well, it works great with the greatsword if you want some stun and extra damage on top of your first charged attack

I'd say GS is the kind of weapon that is "easy to use, hard to master".
It only has 3 basic combo from triangle button which is very straightforward but in order to get the most out of those 3 combos is to charge it (especially the final combo tcs which does the heaviest damage) and knowing when to charged it to the full or when to let it go early or cancel it into a tackle requires a lot of experience.

Great sword is good for a player like yourself whom has tried all of the weapons. There is a slight frustration in the beginning with GS mainly because youre consistently being knocked down. But once you learn the mechanics it becomes a breeze. My only advice is for any build just use your best judgement and dont rely on reddit posts etc. You will have more fun out of learning the game and being creative with your build. If you'll need help with mechanics then thats fine youtube has a good guide out there for mechanics, but other than that go nuts man.

Guard Tackle is actually a good skill, I use it, it's just a defensive skill rather than offensive.

You can get stunned through Tackle in this game if you keep hyper-armoring through attacks, so you have to either be careful about this, or slot in Stun Resistance.

Guard Tackle doesn't run into this issue since it's a normal block. The benefit of Guard Tackle is that it lets you do a full guard in the middle of a charge, vastly reducing any damage you would take from any (blockable) attack and, like Tackle, keeping your charge up. It's a lot slower, but it's also a lot safer.

Hunting Edge also isn't trash, it's just overly hard to use. The mount-damage value on it is pretty high, enough to grab mounts on non-target monsters in one activation, and the follow-up aerial slash is buffed. It takes 2 bugs (for some reason), but it has a fast cooldown, and GS isn't particularly reliant on wirebugs anyway.

Adamant Charge is generally the better option, especially for newer players, but don't count Hunting Edge out completely.

Full sets work on GS because you get an added benefit of defense really without having to get defense skills sets. Unless you choose to go for a defensive build go for it!

Again lol use whatever you want.

Hunting Edge's main issue is that it competes for a slot with Adamant Charged Slash, which is amazing. It's the same problem Lance faces with Anchor Rage being a good and potentially great move, but competing with Spiral Thrust, which is a great move that is potentially amazing. Same goes for LS Sakura vs Helmsplitter; Hammer Courage vs Strength; SA Gambit vs SWB. As a result, these moves end up feeling way worse than they would in a void - you really feel what you're giving up if you've played with the alternatives.

I agree with the Guard Tackle advice, as soon as I tried it out I've never had a reason to go back to regular Tackle. It's the same thing but you don't end up losing a third of your health for using it to tank monster attacks.
