Oh I've lost before.
And the OP is right, I would say the first boss might be the worst designed in the game. The fact Sloan targets randomly means you can't really rely on him to help widdle down a specific one of the two, and Dag will force characters to target him, so even if you do manage to get Selene down a bunch you often simply can't keep it up. Combine that with Selene's propensity for consistent healing + protect, it really get tedious....you often get back to almost square one.
As for throwables? I suppose if you've abused Forage you might have a few of those, but that requires having spammed Forage.
Incidently it actually ISN"T infinate, she can run out of MP (as can a lot of bosses in the game).
That said, you do have some stuff you can do. Selene is weak to Fire and Dag is weak to Thunder. Spending most of your turns Defaulting will keep damage incurred way down (you should basiclaly always be doing this for bosses). If you have potions (or Freelancer's Treat) you can keep your health topped off so Sloan will use his turn to attack. Etc etc.
You act like this isn't a normal valid strategy....
Every time you default you take 50% damage. Thus you want to default as much as possible. Getting up to 3 BP then doing four actions is pretty much the general strategy you should be doing most of the time.
My first game and the first boss. Yeah I was not expect this. After ten minutes with unkillable boss. Ok the game want me to give it my all even on the first boss. So I alt f4 and fight the boss again. This time I 3 round the boss. Good time.
The game basically design for you to chees as much as possible. It either you crush boss or boss crush you. There is no between.
In fairness guy the game legit straight-up tells you "it's usually best to start combat with filling your BP first and guarding often after" or something to that effect in a text box that I can only assume you skipped (despite being a first time player?) or just forgot
But yeah the game tells you that, it absolutely is normal regardless if you're new or a vet because the game goes out of its way to tell you that it should be your go-to strategy, it being your first BD isn't really an excuse considering how much the game wants to make sure you're not confused
