what exactly is ship exploration and what does it do?

The title does pretty good asking my questions bout ship exploration and having online turned on.

Long story short, it's a background item-gathering activity that runs while you're playing. You start it at the boat shop in any of the major cities and after ~3 hours or less (as I recall, 3 hours is as long as an exploration session lasts on the Steam version), you can stop it and get a few random items found while the boat was 'exploring'.

Most of the rewards (at least the ones that I've seen) are things that you can pretty easily farm elsewhere after Chapter 1 so you can safely ignore the system if you prefer not to bother but if you do take a moment to start and stop it every now and then, it basically amounts to a few free boosts every couple hours.

I just starting playing but best I can tell the online turned on allows you to "meet" other players and I think speeds up the item gathering process.

You don't meet anyone, it just says things like your character met such and such's character. Nothing actually happens, it's just flavor. And it doesn't speed up gathering, it just gives you a chance for better drops from it.
